The p urpose o f t his p aper i s t o diag nose t he r easons w hy the memories of suffering and uprising cannot allow movement forward and to investigate the conditions necessary for the possibility of moving forward by l ikening remembering and a rchiving May 18 a s a means for ‘Paving the Way’. This paper describes the cause as follows: first, social amnesia caused by the instrumentalization of memory based on political strategy; second, false social sublimation of dark paths of history caused by social integration based on antagonism; and third, objective contradiction as the pursuit of justice mediated by injustice. In addition, this paper investigates the conditions necessary for ‘Paving the Way’ as follows: first, recognition of the status quo based on ‘cognitive criticism = social criticism’; second, identifying social connections through the interpretation of suffering ; and third, the consciousness of the historical continuity of sedimented violence and uprisings. Through the above discussion, this paper argues that true remembering and archiving must be based on the unalleviated consciousness of negativity by naming those that have been excluded and forgotten in the aftermath. ‘Paving the Way of May 18’ must awaken a sense and change the direction of the historical trajectory that current society has followed.

이 글의 목적은 5･18을 기억하고 기록하는 것을 수도(修道), 즉 ‘길을 닦는다’로 비유하 여, 고통과 항쟁의 기억이 미래로 나아가지 못하게 된 원인을 진단하고 미래로 나아갈 가능 성의 조건을 규명하는 것이다. 이 글은 그 원인을 첫째, 정치적 전략에 기초한 기억의 도구 화가 초래하는 사회적 기억상실로, 둘째, 적대에 기초한 사회적 통합이 초래하는 역사의 어 두운 도정에 대한 잘못된 사회적 승화로, 셋째, 부정의에 매개된 정의의 추구라는 객관적 모순으로 규명한다. 더불어 이 글은 수도의 가능 조건을 첫째, ‘인식비판=사회비판’에 기초 한 현 상태에 대한 재인식을, 둘째, 고통의 해석을 통한 사회적 연관성 규명을, 셋째, 침전된 폭력과 항쟁의 역사적 연속성에 대한 의식으로 규명한다. 이상의 논의를 통해 이 글은 올바 른 기억하기와 기록하기는 배제되고 망각된 이름을 호명하는 부정성에 대한 단호한 의식에 기초해야 하며, 5･18의 수도는 현 사회가 밟아온 역사적 궤적의 방향을 전환하는 감각을 일 깨우는 것임을 주장한다.
