The purpose of this study is to examine how the interpretation of Toegye's thoughts has been made from a religious and spiritual perspective, and to suggest what needs to be considered in order for future studies in this direction to take place in a more meaningfully. For this purpose, this study selected related studies, classified them into three trends, and a nalyzed t hem, a nd r eviewed what arg uments a nd g rounds are presented. The first is that in the context of Confucian religious search, it dealt with Toegye's thoughts or attempted to explore the religious and spiritual aspects found in Toegye's language use. The second is that i t a ttempted to consider the influence of Toeg ye's 理 and 天(命) or 上帝 on l ater t houg hts s ystems. The t hird i s that i t attempted to combine Toegye's thoughts with religious dimensions or spiritual concepts more directly. Next, in this study, a critical approach was attempted, focusing on the limitations of the evidence and conclusion that these studies supposed, and three contents were also mentioned here. First, if Toegye's 理 and 天(命) or his religious aspects in everyday life is used as the main basis for the interpretation, the discussion may move on to Confucianism in general, and the uniqueness of Toegye's thoughts may be weakened. Second, if 理's ‘activity’ thesis is used as another major basis, the reliability of these studies may also decrease because 理's activity can be greatly weakened depending on perspective. Third, related studies showed that the concept of religion and spirituality to be linked to Toegye's thoughts i s somewhat ambiguous, or i t does not provide an appropriate answer to the question of how it can be used at a methodological side. Finally, this study made two short suggestions on what needs t o b e considered i n o rder t o u se Toeg ye's t houg hts a t t he religious and spiritual sides in modern and realistic terms. One is that it is necessary to establish the concept of ‘humanistic spirituality’ to illuminate Toeg ye's thoug hts, and the other i s that related researchers should pay more attention to areas of practical application such as the national curriculum or school education.

본 연구의 목적은, 그동안 국내에서 퇴계 사상에 대한 종교적･영성적 관점에서의 해석이 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 살펴보고, 향후 이러한 성격의 연구들이 더욱 유의미한 방향으로 이 루어지기 위해 고려해야 할 사항에는 무엇이 있을지 짧게 제언하려는 것이다. ① 이를 위해 본 연구에서는, 먼저 세 가지 경향으로 구분하여 관련 연구들이 어떤 주장과 근거를 제시하 고 있는지 검토하였다. 해당 연구들은, 첫째, 유교의 종교성 탐색의 맥락에서 퇴계의 사상을 다루거나 그의 언어 사용에서 발견되는 종교성･영성의 탐구를 시도했다. 둘째, 퇴계의 리와 천 또는 상제 개념 등이 후대에 미친 영향에 관한 고찰을 시도했다. 셋째, 퇴계의 사유를 보다 ‘직접적으로’ 종교적 차원 내지는 영성 개념과 접목하려고 시도했다. ② 이어서 본 연구 에서는, 해당 연구들이 전제하고 있는 근거와 결론에 내포된 한계를 중심으로 비판적인 접 근을 시도하였는데, 여기에서도 세 가지 내용을 언급하였다. 첫째, 퇴계가 말한 천(명)과 상 제 내지는 그가 일상에서 보여준 종교적 측면 등을 해석의 주된 근거로 삼게 되면, 논의의 범주가 유교 일반으로 넘어가 퇴계 사상의 고유성이 도리어 약화될 우려가 있다. 둘째, 리의 ‘능동성(운동성)’ 테제를 또 하나의 주된 근거로 삼게 되면, 리의 발･동･도가 관점에 따라 능 동성이 매우 약화될 수 있는 까닭에 해당 연구들의 신뢰성도 함께 떨어질 수 있다. 셋째, 관련 연구들에서 퇴계의 사상과 연결 짓고자 하는 종교(성)･영성 개념이 다소 모호하거나, 방법론적인 차원에서 어떻게 활용할 수 있는가의 물음에 관한 적절한 답변을 제시하지 못하 고 있다. ③ 끝으로 본 연구에서는, 퇴계 사상에 대한 종교적･영성적 차원의 풀이가 현대적 이면서도 현실적으로 잘 활용되기 위해 염두에 두어야 할 부분은 무엇인지 두 가지의 짧은 제언을 하였는데, 하나는 ‘인문(人文) 영성’의 개념을 정립하여 이 관점으로 퇴계의 사상을 조명할 필요가 있다는 것이고, 다른 하나는 관련 연구자들이 국가 교육과정이나 학교 교육 등과 같은 실천적 적용의 영역에 더 많은 관심을 기울여야 한다는 것이다.
