This study aims to conduct a contrastive study on idiomatic expressions related to dietary life in the Korean and Malay languages. The idiomatic expressions chosen were determined by elements such as ‘food’, ‘cooking tools’, ‘recipe’, and ‘ingredients’. This study compared and analyzed the observed characteristics present in both languages. The findings revealed a significant presence of idiomatic expressions in Korean that revolve around food items prepared with rice, such as ‘rice’, ‘rice cakes’, and ‘porridge’. Meanwhile, the Malay language exhibited a notable abundance of idiomatic expressions about ‘plants’ and ‘fruits’. Furthermore, while some terms were understood in the same way in both languages, there were also examples where they were interpreted differently. For instance, ‘rice’ is commonly associated with ‘economic life’ in both Korean and Malay. However, the ‘salt’ carries a negative connotation in Korean, whereas it holds a positive meaning of ‘experience’ in Malay. Studying the similarities and differences of these two languages can significantly augment our understanding of the corresponding cultures and languages. As well this study can serve as a fundamental basis for language education, textbook production, and dictionary compilation.

이 연구의 목적은 한국어와 말레이어의 식생활과 관련된 관용표현을 대조·분석하는 것아다. 이를 위해 한국어와 말레이어의 ‘음식’, ‘도구’, ‘조리 방법’, ‘식재료’ 용어가 포함된 관용표현을 선정하여 두 언어의 관용표현에서 나타나는 공통점과 차이점을 분석해 보았다. 이 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국어에서는 ‘밥’, ‘떡’, ‘죽’ 등 쌀로 만든 음식 용어, 말레이어에서는 ‘식물’, ‘과일’ 관련 용어가 관용표현에 많이 나타난다. 둘째, 한·말의 관용표현에서는 용어는 공통적이지만 서로 다른 의미로 쓰이는 경우가 있다. 예컨대, ‘쌀’은 한국어와 말레이어에서 모두 ‘경제생활’과 밀접한 관련을 보였지만 ‘소금’의 경우 한국어에서는 ‘고난’이라는 부정적인 의미로 나타나고, 말레이어에서는 ‘경험’이라는 긍정적인 의미를 나타낸다. 셋째, 한국어와 말레이어의 식생활 관용표현에는 두 언어를 사용하는 화자들의 문화와 정서가 반영되어 있다. 이러한 특성들은 관용표현 구성에 선택된 용어와 용어의 의미를 통해서 확인할 수 있다. 이 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 한국어와 말레이어 관용표현의 대조 연구를 통해 언어와 언어의 배경이 되는 문화를 이해하는 데에 기여할 수 있다. 나아가 이 논의의 결과는 언어 교육, 교재와 사전 편찬의 기초 자료가 될 수 있다.
