The purpose of this study is to provide a criterion for picture book play organizers to select play methods. As the number of picture book readers spreads, the age group that enjoys picture book play is expanding, and the methods of play are diversifying, but there has been a lack of research on how the characteristics of picture books can be connected to picture book play. To this end, this study examined the concepts of picture books and play through literature research, and based on this, derived criteria for classifying types of picture books that can be connected to picture book play methods, and classified types of picture books as a medium for picture book play. Picture books are a unique medium that combines text and pictures to tell a story, and the way in which text and pictures are combined in a picture book can be an important criterion for telling a story. Therefore, this study categorized picture books into three categories based on the direction of the combination of text and pictures, and the other category was based on narrative, resulting in a total of six classification criteria. After defining picture book play as the activity of enjoying picture books through play, the study categorized picture book play into four types according to the context of enjoyment: picture book play for nurturing, picture book play for education, picture book play for enjoyment, and picture book play for healing. We then looked at how each type of picture book can be linked to the types of picture book play. The complementary narrative picture book type was appropriate for nurturing, educational, and therapeutic picture book play, but the congruent narrative and congruent non-narrative picture book types were appropriate for nurturing play but not for therapeutic or healing picture book play, and the treatment non-narrative picture book type was difficult to use in picture book play. This study provides a typology that can be applied to one of the many ways in which picture books and play can be combined, but it is significant that it provides objective criteria through academic consideration for something that is entirely dependent on the choices of picture book play planners, and we hope that this is the beginning of finding answers to the difficulties faced by picture book planners in the field.

본 연구의 목적은 그림책의 유형 분류를 통해 그림책놀이 기획자가 놀이 방법을 선택할 수 있는 기준의 한 가지로 제시하고자 함이다. 인쇄술을 발달, 걸출한 작가들의 출현 그리고 포스트모던 문화 등의 영향으로 그림책의 모습은 매우 다채롭게 변화하고, 그림책을 즐기는 연령이나 방법도 다양해졌으나 그림책 연구의 대상은 여전히 유아나 어린이, 교육이나 치유 등의 주제에 쏠려있다. 본 연구는 그림책을 별도의 목적을 가진 활동의 도구가 아닌 독자적인 양식의 문화콘텐츠 매체로 보고, 연령의 제한 없이 그림책의 콘텐츠를 즐기는 활동으로 그림책놀이를 기획하고자 할 때 그림책의 특성과 소통 방법으로의 놀이를 연계할 수 있는 방법을 고찰하고자 했다. 그림책은 상대적으로 적은 페이지에, 글과 그림을 결합해 이야기를 담는 독특성을 가진 매체다. 본 연구에서는 그림책이 이야기를 담는 글과 그림 결합 방식이 그림책의 소통 특성을 결정하는 요소가 될 수 있음에 주목하고, 놀이 매체로서의 그림책을 재정의한 뒤 그림책의 유형을 글과 그림의 결합구조와 서사성 여부를 결합한 6가지로 설정했다. 다음앤 고대로부터의 놀이 속성을 살펴서 그림책과 놀이가 결합하는 그림책놀이의 개념을 정리했다. 또, 그림책놀이가 진행되는 맥락을 기준으로 그림책놀이를 ‘양육을 위한 그림책놀이’, ‘교육을 위한 그림책놀이’, ‘향유를 위한 그림책놀이’, ‘심리치유를 위한 그림책놀이’의 4가지 성격으로 나눴다. 그리고 놀이매체로의 그림책 유형 6가지가 4가지 그림책놀이와 어떻게 연결될 수 있는지를 살폈다. 이를 통해, ‘보완 서사’ 그림책 유형은 양육, 교육, 향유와 심리치유를 위한 그림책놀이 모두에 적절했으나 ‘일치 서사’, ‘일치 비서사’ 그림책 유형은 양육 놀이에는 적절해도 향유나 심리치유를 위한 그림책놀이에는 적절하지 못하다는 것, ‘대위 비서사’ 그림책 유형은 그림책놀이에 사용하기 어려움이 있음을 밝혔다. 이 연구에서 제시된 그림책의 분류 기준은 그림책과 놀이의 결합을 해석하는 여러 시선 중 한 가지이며, 그림책 유형과 놀이 연결의 적합성에 충분히 객관적으로 볼 수 있는 기준을 제시하지 못했다는 한계가 있다. 그러나 본 연구는 다양해지는 그림책의 개성이 오히려 그림책놀이 기획자에겐 선택에 대한 혼란으로 여겨지는 환경에서 그동안 그림책놀이 기획자의 개인적 선택에 의존했던 그림책과 놀이의 결합 방법에 대해 학문적 고찰을 통한 객관적 기준을 제시했다는 점에 의미가 있으며, 이를 계기로 연령의 제한 없이 그림책 자체와 소통하는 즐거움을 누리는 그림책놀이 방법에 대한 연구가 이어지기를 희망한다.
