The purpose of this study is to reflect on the socio-cultural significance contained in the Gyubang crafts of Joseon women under the Confucian ideology of the Joseon Dynasty and to examine how the Gyubang crafts of Joseon women affected the economy, society, and culture at the time. Literature research and empirical research were conducted to find out the sociocultural meaning contained in Gyubang crafts. The process of finding the socio-cultural meaning of Gyubang crafts is an important part of the life style and aesthetic consciousness of women in the Joseon Dynasty, and Gyubang crafts contain the life and spirit of women in the Joseon Dynasty. Household goods made in Gyubang in the late Joseon Dynasty were not just crafts, but transformed into an economic industry and played an important social function. In addition, women’s Gyubang crafts served as an inner healing process to purify their daily sorrows and desires amid social oppression and as a means to vent creative desires.

본 연구는 조선 시대 유교적 관념 아래 규범의 억압 안에서 발현되는 조선 여성들의 규방공예에 담긴 사회문화적 의미를 되새겨 보고, 조선 시대 여성들의 규방공예가 당시 경제, 사회, 문화에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지를 살펴보는 데 연구의 목적을 둔다. 전통 규방공예의 개념과 규방공예에 담긴 사회문화적 의미를 알아보기 위해 고서 기록, 관련 서적, 선행 연구 등 문헌연구를 중심으로 자료를 수집하였고, 조선 시대 규방공예를 시각적으로 볼 수 있는 유물과 사진 자료, 재현자료 등 시각자료를 종합적으로 참고하였다. 규방공예가 갖는 사회문화적 의미를 찾아보는 과정은 조선 시대 여성들의 삶의 방식과 미의식을 엿볼 수 있는 중요한 부분으로 규방공예품에는 조선 시대 여성들의 생활상과 정신이 담겨 있다. 조선 후기 규방에서 만들어진 생활용품들은 단순히 공예에 그치는 것이 아니라 그 당시 하나의 경제 산업으로 중요한 사회적 기능을 담당했으며, 여성들의 규방공예는 사회적 억압 속에서 일상의 애환을 정화하는 내적 치유 과정인 동시에 창조적 욕구를 분출하는 수단으로 작용하였다.
