This study aims to examine the residential environmental factors that affect the building of local communities for North Korean defectors' integration and to analyze the mediating effect of cultural adaptation strategies selected by North Korean defectors as immigrants. A survey was conducted involving 100 North Korean defectors. The data from this survey was used in a multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between residential environments and the sense of local community. The Baron & Kenny method was employed to analyze the mediating effects. The results show that the use of outdoor facilities such as parks and trails, participation in group activities with North and South Korean residents in the neighborhood, positive perception of the physical environment such as easy-to-find structures, and comfort and satisfaction with the internal environment of the house affect the sense of local community. The adoption of integration strategies partially mediates the relationship between residential environments and the sense of local community. These results suggest elements to consider when planning residential environments to foster local communities that support the social integration of North Korean defectors.

본 연구의 목적은 북한이탈주민의 지역사회로의 통합을 위해 이들의 지역공동체 형성에 영향을 미치는 주거환경적 요인을 분석하고, 이주민으로 이들이 취하는 문화적응전략이 주거환경과 지역공동체의식의 관계에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 100명의 북한이탈주민을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시했다. 북한이탈주민의 주거환경과 지역공동체의식의 관계를 분석하기 위해 다중회귀분석을 사용했고, 북한이탈주민이 이주민으로서 선택하는 문화적응전략이 주거환경과 지역공동체의식의 관계에 미치는 영향을 분석하기 위해 매개효과분석 방법을 사용했다. 그 결과, 공원, 산책로와 같은 야외시설의 이용, 지역 내에서 남북주민이 함께하는 단체활동의 참여, 길찾기쉬운구조 및 쾌적성과 같은 물리적 환경에 대한 긍정적인 인지, 거주하는 주택의 내부환경에 대한 만족도가 지역공동체의식에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 자신의 문화 정체성을 유지하면서 남한의 문화를 수용하는 통합의 문화적응전략을 취하는 것이, 주거환경과 지역공동체의식의 관계에 영향을 주는 부분매개효과가 있음을 알 수 있다. 연구를 통해, 북한이탈주민의 지역공동체 형성을 위해서 이들이 쉽게 이용할 수 있고 일반주민들과 자연스럽게 접촉할 수 있는 시설과 공간이 필요하고, 북한이탈주민에게 필요한 정보의 공유와 정서적 지원을 위한 사회적 관계를 형성하며 남북주민이 서로의 문화적 차이를 이해할 수 있는 활동과 프로그램이 필요함을 알 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 주거내부와 근린환경에 대한 만족도를 향상시킬 필요가 있음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 결과는 북한이탈주민의 지역공동체 형성을 위한 주거환경 계획 시에 고려해야 할 점들을 시사한다.
