This paper discusses the documentary film “I'm going to North Korea for a while.” which revolves around the Japanese wife, Aiko Nakamoto, who moved to North Korea with her Korean husband as part of a repatriation project. The paper examines the social status and perception of Japanese wives in Japanese society through the family history of Aiko and her sisters highlighted in the film. Dreaming of a utopia, the Japanese wives who followed their Korean husbands to North Korea faced a reality far beyond imagination, struggling with discrimination and poverty. Despite opposing their families to move, they had to rely on their Japanese families to survive in North Korea. However, their existence became a burden and a taboo for their families in Japan. Sixty years after the initiation of the repatriation project, not a few are unaware of the existence of Japanese wives or the history of the repatriation project itself. Yet, they still hope for a return visit to their homeland, placing their last hopes in the remaining years of their life. This film listens to the silent screams of those who have been pushed into a forgotten corner of this unfortunate history. In the early 2000s, as relations between North Korea and Japan worsened, the Japanese society criticized even the demand for the resumption of the wives' repatriation project, creating an atmosphere that seemed to dismiss it as ‘their own responsibility’. However, just as the repatriation project started on a humanitarian basis, the project for their return should also proceed humanely. The paper evaluates this film as a work that poses questions to Japanese society about its deeply ingrained perception of North Korea through the invisible lives of Japanese wives and explores the possibilities for the future.

본고는 귀국사업으로 재일조선인 남편과 함께 월북한 일본인 처를 둘러싼 다큐멘터리 영화 『잠깐 북한에 다녀올게』에 관한 논고이다. 본고는 이 영화에서 조명한 아이코 자매의 가족사를 통해 일본인 처에게 놓인 사회적 위상과 일본인 처라는 존재를 일본 사회는 어떻게 인식해 왔는지에 대해 고찰한다. 그 당시 가족의 반대를 무릅쓰고 월북 했지만, 그곳에서 살아남기 위해서는 일본 가족의 도움에 의지해야 했다. 하지만 그녀 의 존재는 일본에 있는 가족들에게 부담이자 인연을 끊은 금기의 존재가 되어버렸다. 귀국사업이 시작된 지 60년이 지난 지금, 일본인 처라는 존재는 물론 귀국사업이라는 역사조차 모르는 사람이 적지 않다. 그러나 지금도 그들은 고향 방문(귀향)을 바라며 얼마 남지 않은 삶에 마지막 희망을 걸고 있다. 그런 불운한 역사의 한구석으로 내몰려 잊혀진 이들의 소리 없는 아우성에 이 영화는 귀를 기울였다. 2000년대 전반 북일 관계 가 악화 되면서 일본 사회에서는 일본인 처의 귀향사업 재개를 요구하는 것조차 비난을 했고 ‘자기 책임’으로 일축하는 듯한 분위기가 조성되었다. 그러나 ‘귀국 사업’은 여러 폴리틱스가 중첩된 결과 행해진 것으로 밝혀진 만큼 ‘귀향’에 관해서는 그것을 외교 카 드로 이용하는 것이 아니라, 어디까지나 인도 문제로서 일본측이 주체적으로 추진해 나 가야 한다. 본고는 이 영화를 그동안 불가시화되어 온 일본인 처의 모습을 통해 일본 사회에 뿌리 깊게 박힌 북한에 대한 인식에 물음을 던지며 미래의 가능성을 모색하자는 화두를 일본 사회에 던지는 작품이라고 평가하였다.
