This article examines two “gender backlash” phenomena that have occurred in Japan since the 2000s, and explores the arguments and differences between them. The first example of gender backlash is the fierce attacks on “gender–free education” and the enactment of local government’s ordinances for the creation of society where women and men participate equally in the early to mid– 2000s, and the second is the hate speech and denial of femininity against transgender women that began in the late 2010s, which is still ongoing. The backlash against transgender women began when National Ochanomizu Women's University announced that it would admit transgender women, and has since spread rapidly on social networking services (SNS). Rather than viewing these two reactionary movements as separate phenomena, this article identifies them as gender backlashes that share a common thread of resistance by “gender conservatives” to the threat of the collapse of the conservative gender/sexual role order. Through a comparative analysis of the two phenomena, it aims to identify the characteristics of the gender backlash in Japan and sheds light on the background of the stagnation of the debate on gender equality and feminism in Japan over the past two decades. It also briefly examines the strategies and discourses of feminism in Japan to counter the backlash.

이 논문은 2000년대 이후 일본에서 발생한 두 번의 “젠더 백래시” 현상을 고찰하고 각각의 논점과 상이점을 살펴본다. 젠더 백래시 첫 번째 사례가 2000년대 초중반에 “젠 더프리 교육(ジェンダーフリー教育)”과 지방자치단체의 남녀공동참획사회（男女共同参 画社会)조례 제정에 대한 격렬한 공격과 반동의 움직임이고, 두 번째가 2010년대 후반 부터 시작되어 현재도 진행 중인 트랜스젠더 여성에 대한 혐오발언과 여성성의 부정이 다. 트랜스젠더에 대한 백래시는 국립 오차노미즈 여자대학이 트랜스젠더 여성의 입학 을 허가한다고 발표한 것을 계기로 SNS(Social Networking Service)를 중심으로 급속히 확산되어 오늘날에 이르고 있다. 이 논문은 이 두 반동적 움직임을 개별적인 현상으로 보지 않고, 보수적인 젠더/성역 할 질서가 무너질 지도 모른다는 위기감에 대한 ‘젠더 보수파’의 저항이라는 공통점을 가진 “젠더 백래쉬”로 규정하고, 이 두 번의 현상을 비교 분석하여 일본에서 나타난 젠 더 백래시의 특징을 규명하고 지난 20여 년 동안 일본에서 젠더 평등 및 페미니즘에 대한 논의가 정체되다시피 했던 배경을 밝히고자 한다. 더불어 백래시에 대한 일본 내 페미니즘의 대항 전략과 담론도 간략히 살펴보고 그 공과를 평가해 본다.
