This paper analyzes causal relationship between unemployment rate and crime rate using time series data of Korea. Annual data from 1990 to 2020 are used to test the presence of Granger causality from unemployment rate to the crime rates of violent, theft, assault, and intelligence crimes. Prior to conducting Granger causality test, time series properties of the variables are examined by unit root and cointegration tests, and an error correction model is constructed to study the causal relationship between unemployment rate and crime rates of major crimes. Granger causality test based on the estimation results of the error correction model found that a significant short-run causality running from unemployment rate to crime rates of theft, assault and intelligence crimes. There also exists significant long-run causality between unemployment rate and theft crime rate. However, causality between unemployment rate and violent crime rate was not significant both in the short-run and the long-run. Empirical result of this paper implies that although unemployment is not related to violent crimes it could have significant effect on crime rates of theft, assault and intelligence crimes in both the short-run and the long-run, and unemployment rate data could provide useful information in forecasting crime rates of these crimes.

본 논문은 국내 시계열 자료를 사용하여 실업률과 범죄율 사이의 인과관계를 분석하였다. 1990년부터 2020년까지의 연간 자료를 활용하여 실업률에서 강력, 절도, 폭력 및 지능범죄율로의 Granger 인과성이 존재하는지 검정하였다. Granger 인과성 검정에 앞서 단위근 검정과 공적분 검정을 통해 변수들의 시계 열 특성을 점검하고 오차수정모형을 설정하여 실업률과 주요 범죄율 간의 인과관계를 분석하였다. 오차 수정모형의 추정 결과에 근거하여 Granger 인과성을 검정한 결과, 단기적으로 실업률에서 절도, 폭력, 지능범죄율로의 유의한 인과관계가 발견되었다. 실업률과 절도범죄율 사이에는 유의한 장기적 인과관계 도 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 실업률과 강력범죄율 사이에는 장단기 모두에서 인과관계가 유의하 지 않았다. 본 논문의 이러한 분석 결과는 실업률이 강력범죄와는 연관성이 적지만, 절도, 폭력 및 지능 범죄에는 장단기적으로 유의한 영향을 미칠 수 있으며, 이들 범죄율을 예측하는데 실업률 자료가 유용한 정보를 제공할 수 있음을 시사한다.
