Objectives This study aims to investigate the narrative structure of the sports movie‘King Richard’and identify the ideological discourse inherent in it Methods For this purpose, the film 'King Richard' directed by Reynaldo Marcus Green was selected as a research object, and textual analysis and content analysis were conducted from the perspective of critical theory. The data was collected through movie DVDs, online movie communities, and NAVER's TVOD OTT platform. Based on the collected data, the movie was repeatedly watched. Results The narrative structure of King Richard has three sequences, which are organized into three stages: Life of a black man in the ghetto: Poverty and discrimination - Conflict of educational styles: Coach vs. Richard Williams - Black success in the‘white sport’of tennis. Second, the ideologies inherent in the movie King Richard were race ideology, class ideology, and family ideology. Conclusions Racial Ideology: Racist remarks are heard throughout the movie, and the attitudes, postures, and facial expressions of white people toward black people show that white supremacy was prevalent in American society. Class ideology shows that sports are intertwined with hierarchy and social relations, and are actually used as a tool to produce dominant ideologies, as the main character of the movie, Richard Williams, planned to make his daughters world-class tennis players before they were born. Finally, the “Family Ideology” section shows the sacrifices that Richard Williams' family makes to make Venus Williams and Serena Williams tennis stars, and how family stability is valued over the independence, freedom, and development of individual family members.

본 연구는 스포츠 영화 <킹 리차드>의 전개구조를 알아보고, 이 영화에 내재된 이데올로기적 담론을 구명하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 레이날도 마르쿠스 그린 감독의 영화 <킹 리차드>를 연구대상으로 선정하였고, 텍스트분석 (textual analysis)과 내용분석(content analysis)을 실시하였다. 이에 대한 자료는 영화 dvd, 인터넷 영화 커뮤니티, 네이 버의 TVOD OTT 플랫폼 ‘네이버 시리즈온’을 통해 수집하였다. 수집한 자료들을 토대로 영화를 반복 시청하였으 며, 이상의 연구방법을 통해 도출된 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영화의 전개구조이다. <킹 리차드>의 서사구조는 3개의 시퀀스를 갖고 있으며, 전개 구조는 <빈민가 출신 흑 인의 삶: 가난과 차별, 교육방식의 대립: 코치 vs. 리차드 윌리엄스, ‘백인 스포츠’ 테니스계에서 거머쥔 흑인의 성 공> 3단계로 구성되어 있다. 둘째, 영화 〈킹 리차드〉에 내재된 이데올로기로 인종 이데올로기, 계급 이데올로기, 가 족 이데올로기가 나타났다.‘인종 이데올로기’는 영화 전반에 걸쳐 인종차별적인 발언을 들을 수 있는데 이를 통해 백인들이 흑인을 대하는 태도나 자세, 표정 등을 통해 ‘백인우월주의’가 미국 사회에 만연해있었음을 알 수 있 다.‘계급 이데올로기’는 영화 주인공인 리차드 윌리엄스가 딸들이 태어나기도 전에 딸들을 세계적인 테니스 선수 로 만들 것을 계획한 모습을 통해 스포츠가 계층구조, 사회관계와 결합하여 있으며 실질적으로 지배 이데올로기를 생산하는 도구로 활용되는 것을 볼 수 있다. 마지막으로 ‘가족 이데올로기’는 리차드 윌리엄스 가족이 비너스 윌 리엄스와 세레나 윌리엄스를 테니스 스타로 만들기 위해 희생하는 장면을 통해 가족 성원 개개인의 독립, 자유, 발전 보다 가족의 안정이 더 중시되는 가치관을 발견할 수 있다. 이 중 인종 이데올로기가 가장 강조되어, 인종 간의 갈등 과 차별 속에서 스포츠 스타로써 성공하기 위한 몰입과 열정으로 표출되었다.
