In an effort to preserve and succeed the traditional culture, several projects and programs on traditional crafting are being promoted as measures to shed a new light on the value of Korean traditions and cultures, and herald the value and excellence of traditional crafting. The foundation has 8 groups representing fields of art and craft, and certified master craftspeople in 12 fields are residing in the Training Center for Important Intangible Cultural Properties within the Cultural Heritage Foundation, and providing education and experience programs designed for the general public, in order to promote the artistic activities of intangible heritage holders, apprenticeship, and the respective field of arts and crafts. Among the 12 fields of crafts, sculpture is a traditional crafting technique exhibiting the excellence of advanced skills and the beauty of Korean tradition. However, the public lacks deeper understanding on the concepts and finer points of traditional sculpting techniques. Currently there are ongoing programs that consists of continuous sessions (5 to 10 sessions) for a certain period in each year. While these sessions have advantage in providing the understanding on the field of craft and high quality of output through continuous training for a specific term with a small group, Such an approach can have a limitation as a training curriculum for the larger public audience to experience. Therefore, it is the intention to develop a short-term experience program leveraging melting inlay technique among the sculpting techniques.

전통 문화를 보존하고 계승하기 위해 전통 문화에 대한 가치를 재조명하고 전 통 공예의 가치와 우수성을 알리기 위한 방안으로 다양한 전통 공예 사업과 프로 그램이 추진되고 있다. 국가유산진흥원 <(구)한국문화재재단>에서 운영하고 있는 국가무형유산 전수 교육관 <(구)국가무형문화재 전수교육관>에서는 8개의 예능종목 단체와 12개의 기능종목 보유자들이 입주해 있으며, 보유자의 작품 활동, 전수 교육, 각 종목에 대한 홍보를 위해 일반인 대상 교육, 체험 프로그램을 진행하고 있다. 12개의 기 능 종목 중 조각은 숙련된 기술의 우수성과 전통의 아름다움을 잘 나타내는 전통 공예기법이지만, 대중들은 전통 조각기법의 정확한 개념과 내용의 이해가 부족하다. 조각은 매년 일정 기간 동안 지속적인 교육(5~10회)으로 진행되는 프로그램 이 진행되고 있다. 소수 인원으로 일정기간 동안 지속적인 교육의 기능종목에 대 한 이해와 높은 품질의 결과물을 가지는 장점을 가지게 되지만, 장시간 교육을 받 아야하는 기간의 제약으로 인해 많은 대중들이 쉽게 교육받지 못하는 아쉬움이 있어서 조각 기법 중 비교적 과정이 간단한 소상감 기법을 활용한 단기 체험 프 로그램을 개발하고자 한다. 조각 종목 중 선상감이나 눈금상감 등의 기법을 실습 하기 위해서 바탕금속과 감입금속이 필요하다. 전통 조각 종목에서 바탕금속으로 가장 많이 사용하는 적동을 사용하고 적동에 소상감 기법을 적용할 감입금속으로 주석을 활용하고자 한다. 주석은 금속의 낮은 녹는점과 유연성으로 인해 다른 금 속에 비해 다루기 수월하여 전통조각기법 중 바탕금속에 파낸 홈에 금이나 은 아 말감 합금으로 메워 무늬를 넣는 소상감의 감입금속으로 적합하다 판단된다. 이 에 소상감을 활용한 전통금속조각 단기 교육체험 프로그램을 개발하여 대중들이 전통 조각 기법에 대해 이해하고 일반인들이 쉽게 접근할 수 있으며, 단시간 조각장 기능종목을 체험할 수 있는 기회가 되길 바란다.
