In this article, I delve into the activities of the Honam and Hoseo Sunmuyeong (兩湖巡撫營) during the year of 1894. Sunmuyeong, as the Supreme Command, played a crucial role in suppressing the uprising of the Donghak Peasant Army. As the Commander in Chief of Sunmuyoung, General Shin Chung-hee (申正熙) found himself in a precarious situation. Several critical factors influenced his actions: Japanese Troops at Gyeongbokgung: The Japanese forces had captured Gyeongbokgung (景福宮), the royal palace where the Korean king resided. Their presence directly interfered with the domestic affairs of the Joseon Dynasty. Non-Cooperation with Japanese Troops: General Shin Chung-hee had no intention of collaborating with the Japanese troops. His stance led to his dismissal even before the conclusion of the civil war. Due to his dismissal, the official last report from Sunmuyoung could not be officially released. However, recent discoveries shed light on an alternative source: the Gabogunjungsilgi (甲午軍政實記). This report was prepared by the official recorders of Sunmuyoung and provides valuable insights into the process of establishing military organizations and the overall military activities during that period. By examining the Gabogunjungsilgi, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of the intricate dynamics and challenges faced by Sunmuyoung and its commander, General Shin Chung-hee, during this critical historical juncture.
