This study aims to critically evaluate two extreme understandings and practices of evangelism in the Korean church in the late twentieth century in order to provide a model of biblical understanding and practice of evangelism for the contemporary Korean church. The understanding of evangelism is very important because it can determine the attitude of the church and Christians towards the world. By and large, the Korean church has been concerned with church-centred activities and has focused on the proclamation of the gospel for personal salvation and the quantitative growth of the church as its most important mission. On the other hand, some Korean churches have emphasised changing the world through social mission, which involves socio-political activities with a social concern rather than personal evangelism and outreach, as the church's top priority. As examples of these two extreme understandings and practices of evangelism in the Korean church, this paper will examine and evaluate the conservative church, which has pursued personal salvation and quantitative church growth, and the progressive church, which has pursued social and political concerns and the transformation of society and the world, and propose a biblical and right model of evangelism in the contemporary Korean church. To do so, we will focus on the nature of the kingdom of God, the gospel that Jesus proclaimed, to explore the etymological definition, content, and understanding of evangelism as understood by the early church in the New Testament. While it is positive that the Korean church's passionate proclamation of the gospel and evangelistic activities have contributed to the miraculous growth of the church and the democratisation of Korean society, it is necessary to examine the understanding and practice of evangelism in the Korean church in the late twentieth century to see if the Korean church has simply created members for the sake of the church or only socially concerned members. This study suggests that three things are needed as a model for biblical evangelism in the Korean church. First, the true gospel of Jesus, the kingdom of God, must be proclaimed and restored. Second, because the Korean church's distorted and extreme methods of evangelism stem from a wrong understanding of the kingdom of God, the Korean church should emphasise teaching and practice for a correct understanding of the nature of the kingdom of God. Third, the Korean church needs to proclaim Jesus as Saviour and Lord of the Kingdom of God, while also teaching and emphasising the social concern and responsibility of the Korean church and Christians. Both of these elements are commands of Jesus as Lord of the Kingdom of God and duties of the people of the Kingdom of God. There is always a tension among Korean churches and Christians between proclaiming the gospel as a mode of evangelism and social concern and involvement. If the Korean church balances its emphasis on gospel proclamation and social concern, the gospel, the kingdom of God, will be initiated, expanded, and fulfilled in the second coming of Jesus Christ.

본 연구는 20세기 후반 한국 교회의 전도에 대한 두 극단적인 이해와 실천을 비판 적으로 평가하여 현대 한국 교회에 성경적 전도의 이해와 실천의 모델을 제시하는 것 을 목적으로 한다. 전도에 대한 이해는 교회와 그리스도인들이 세상을 대하는 태도를 결정할 수 있기 때문에 매우 중요하다. 대체로 한국 교회는 교회를 중심으로 하는 활 동 자체에 관심을 가지고 가장 중요한 사명으로 개인적인 구원을 위한 복음 선포와 교회를 양적으로 성장시키는 일에 집중해왔다. 반면에 일부 한국 교회는 개인적인 복음 선포와 전도 활동 보다는 사회적 관심을 가지고 사회 정치적 활동이 수반된 사 회선교를 통해 세상을 변화시키는 것을 교회의 최우선의 과제라고 강조해 왔다. 한국 교회에서 전도의 두 극단적인 이해와 실천의 사례로 교회성장을 표방하며 개인적 구 원과 교회의 양적 성장을 추구했던 보수적인 교회와 사회 정치적 관심을 가지고 민중 신학을 표방하며 사회와 세상의 변화를 추구했던 진보적 교회를 각각 살펴보고 평가 를 통해 현대 한국 교회의 성경적이고 바른 전도의 모델을 제안하고자 한다. 이를 위 해 신약성경에 나타난 초대교회에서 이해했던 전도의 어원적 정의와 내용 그리고 전 도의 이해를 탐구하기 위해 예수가 선포했던 복음인 하나님 나라의 본질을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 한국 교회의 열정적인 복음 선포와 전도활동을 통해 기적적인 교회성장과 한국 사회의 민주화에 크게 기여했던 점들은 긍정적으로 생각할 수 있지만 한 국 교회가 단순히 교회를 위한 교인만을 양성하거나 사회적 관심만 갖은 교인들만 만 들지는 않았는지 20세기 후반의 한국 교회의 전도의 이해와 실천을 돌아볼 필요가 있 다. 본 연구를 통해 한국 교회의 바람직한 전도의 이해와 모델을 위해 세 가지가 필 요하다. 첫째, 예수가 선포했던 진정한 복음인 하나님 나라를 선포하고 회복해야 한 다. 둘째, 한국 교회의 왜곡되고 극단적인 전도의 방식은 하나님 나라의 관한 잘못된 이해에서 비롯되었기 때문에 한국 교회는 하나님 나라의 본질에 대한 바른 이해를 통 해 실천할 수 있도록 강조해야 한다. 셋째, 한국 교회는 예수를 구주이자 하나님 나라 의 주인으로 선포하며 아울러 한국 교회와 그리스도인의 사회적 관심과 책임을 가르 치고 강조할 필요가 있다. 이 두 가지 요소 즉, 복음 선포와 사회적 관심 모두 하나님 나라의 주인인 예수의 명령이며 하나님 나라 백성의 의무이기 때문이다. 한국 교회와 그리스도인들 사이에는 전도의 방식인 복음 선포와 사회적 관심 사이의 관계에 긴장 이 항상 존재한다. 한국 교회가 복음 선포와 사회적 관심을 균형 있게 강조한다면 복 음인 하나님 나라가 시작되고 확장되며 예수 그리스도의 재림으로 성취될 것이다.
