This article explores the meaning and role of religious literacy and Christian literacy with relations of the general understanding of literacy, and how ‘prayer language’ can enhance and promote Christian literacy. At the same time, this research is concerned with constructing a relationship between literacy and language theory and prayer language, because it is ‘language’ that runs through literacy and prayer. Literacy is generally defined as the ability to read and comprehend. However, literacy expands in political, economic, and socio-cultural dimensions. The expansion of literacy helps shape identity in a rapidly changing society by helping people understand themselves and establish their relationships with the world. This understanding of literacy is the basis for defining religious literacy and Christian literacy. Religious literacy involves learning about the system and language of one’s own religion, as well as learning from the religions of others. Furthermore, religious literacy is the ability to understand the uniqueness of religious phenomena in relation to politics, economics, society, and culture. Similarly, Christian literacy has similar characteristics to religious literacy. However, it does not exclude the distinctive dimensions of Christianity. Prayer is the way by which Christian literacy is enhanced and promoted. Understandings of literacy in general, religious/Christian literacy, and prayer are all shaped by language, and it is therefore relevant to examine the relationship between philosophical discourse on language and Christian literacy. In order to do so, this article will examine Gottlob Frege’s theory of language and John L. Austin’s speech-act theory to explore the connections between language, prayer, and literacy. Furthermore, Ludwig J. J. Wittgenstein’s social rules/contexts of language use will be examined to argue that there is a connection between Christian literacy and the meaning-making and discourse theories of language. Finally, the transcendent uniqueness of prayer language will be examined to argue that prayer language can be positively utilized to enhance Christian literacy.

필자는 본 논문을 통해 문해력에 대한 일반적 이해를 중심으로 종교 문해력과 기 독교 문해력의 의미와 역할에 대해 탐구하고 ‘기도 언어’가 기독교 문해력을 강화하고 증진하는데 기여함을 입증하고자 한다. 동시에 본 논문은 문해력과 언어 이론 그리고 기도 언어 사이의 상관관계를 구성하는 일에 집중한다. 이것이 가능한 이유는 문해력 과 기도 사이를 관통하는 것이 ‘언어’이기 때문이다. 일반적으로 문해력은 글을 읽고 이해하는 능력으로 정의된다. 그러나 다변하는 시대의 흐름에 따라 문해력은 정치, 경 제, 사회, 문화적 차원으로 확장된다. 따라서 문해력은 급변하는 사회 안에서 자기를 이해하고 세계와의 관계를 설정함으로써 정체성을 형성하도록 돕는다. 이와 같은 문 해력 이해는 종교/기독교 문해력을 탐구하는데 도움이 된다. 종교 문해력은 자기 종 교의 체계와 언어에 대해 배움과 동시에 타자의 종교로부터 배움을 포함한다. 나아가 종교 문해력은 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화와 더불어 종교현상을 이해하는 능력을 뜻한다. 기독교 문해력은 종교 문해력과 유사한 특징을 보이지만, 기독교의 독특한 차원을 배 제하지 않는다. 기독교 문해력이란 기독교의 언어와 실천에 대해 이해하는 것이다. 동시에 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화와의 관계 속에서 형성되는 기독교 고유의 특징에 대해 배우고 이를 표현하는 차원까지 포함한다. 기도는 기독교 문해력을 증진하는 주요한 수단이다. 기도는 인간과 하나님 사이의 대화(말)인 바, 기도 언어의 특징을 살피는 것은 기독교 문해력을 이해하는데 도움이 된다. 이처럼 문해력과 종교/기독교 문해력, 그리고 기도는 모두 언어적 특징과 더불어 상관관계를 형성한다. 따라서 언어 이론과 기독교 문해력의 상관관계를 살펴보는 일은 유의미하다. 이를 위해 고틀로프 프레게 (Gottlob Frege)의 언어 이론을 살피고 존 오스틴(John L. Austin)의 언어 행위(언어 의 효력과 성취) 이론을 중심으로 언어와 기도 그리고 문해력의 상관성에 대해 탐구 할 것이다. 나아가 루드비히 비트겐슈타인(Ludwig J. J. Wittgenstein)의 언어 사용의 사회적 규칙/맥락의 의미에 대해 살필 것이다. 이를 중심으로 기독교 문해력과 언어 의 의미 형성 및 화행이론이 상관관계에 있음을 논증할 것이다. 끝으로, 기도 언어의 초월적 독특성에 대해 살펴볼 계획인데, 특별히 언어의 화행이론(Speech-Act Theory) 과 의미의 동일성(Identity) 이론과 어떤 관계를 형성하는지에 대해 집중할 것이다. 이 를 통해 본 논문이 설정한 바, 기도 언어가 기독교 문해력 향상에 긍정적으로 활용됨을 논증할 것이다.
