This study aims to analyzed meanings and structure of the external ratio and explore desirable teaching and learning method of external ratio. The external ratio has two meanings, one of which is a size of the per-unit quantity and the other one is the third quantity. The external ratio includes elements such as its initial concepts, thinking of averaging, recognizing a unit quantity, and construction of the third quantity. Based on this theoretical analysis, we analyzed the external ratio in math textbooks from three perspectives and the textbooks dealt with them very inadequately. And teaching and learning directions were set up for understanding the external ratio. The directions are 1) to form a mental object of the external ratio, 2) to recognize of a unit quantity, 3) to construct the third quantity. According to these directions, a teaching and learning method for density of population among the external ratio was specified. As a result of applying it, it was seen that students understood the meaning of the external ratio related to the degree of crowding as the size of per-unit quantity and the third quantity and formed related structures. A teaching and learning method devised in this study will help to systematically and gradually deal with external ratio in elementary school mathematics.

본 연구는 외적 비율 개념을 분석하고 외적 비율의 바람직한 학습-지도 방안을 탐 색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저 외적 비율 개념을 분석하여 외적 비율이 단위량 당의 크기로서의 의미와 제3의 양으로서의 의미를 지니며, 외적 비율의 구조는 외 적 비율의 초기 개념, 평균화의 생각, 단위량의 인식, 제3의 양 구성이라는 요소로 이루어지는 것으로 파악하였다. 이를 바탕으로 우리나라 초등학교 수학 교과서에서 외적 비율이 어떻게 다루어지고 있는지 살펴본 결과, 외적 비율의 의미나 구조가 충분히 다루어지지 않고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이어서 외적 비율의 의미와 구조 분 석을 바탕으로, 외적 비율의 심상 형성, 단위량의 인식, 제3의 양 구성의 학습-지도 방향을 설정하였다. 설정한 학습-지도 방향에 따라 외적 비율 중 붐비는 정도에 대 한 학습-지도 방안을 구체화하여 소규모 실험 수업에 적용하여 학생들이 외적 비 율의 의미를 이해하고 관련 구조를 형성해 나가는 것을 확인하였다.
