The purpose of this study is to analyze Carl Gustav Jung’s mother archetype as revealed in three female characters in Park Jung-yoon’s novel Princess Bari to discover the multifaceted aspects of the human personality. Jung defined the mother's representation as the concept of ‘mother of two personalitie’, and classified it as ‘nurturing mother’ and ‘swallowing mother’, respectively. The 'nurturing mother' is a real human mother who loves and provides nutrition for her children. The ‘swallowing mother’ is a divine mother, cruel and greedy. In the text, Bari has three mothers. The birth mother is a swallowing mother who abandons her seventh daughter, and the midwife is a swallowing mother who acts for her own satisfaction, not Bari’s true growth. The rabbit is a mother who raises Bari for her growth and true happiness. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that all three female characters who play the role of Bari’s ‘mother’ in the work Princess Bari have a dual aspect.

본 연구의 목적은 박정윤의 소설 『프린세스 바리』속 세 여성 캐릭터에 드러난 칼 구 스타프 융의 어머니 원형을 분석함으로써 인간 내면에 자리한 다면적인 면모를 발견하 는 것에 있다. 융은 어머니 표상을 ‘두 인격의 어머니’ 개념으로 정의하며, 각각 ‘양육하 는 어머니’와 ‘삼키는 어머니’로 분류한 바 있다. ‘양육하는 어머니’는 실재하는 인간적 인 어머니로, 자녀를 사랑하고 영양을 주는 역할을 하며, ‘삼키는 어머니’는 신(神)적인 어머니로, 잔인하고 탐욕스러운 모습을 보인다. 본문 속 바리에게는 세 명의 어머니가 존재한다. 첫 번째 어머니인 생모는 아들을 낳기 위해 낳은 일곱째 아이까지 모두 딸이 태어나자 신생아인 바리를 산파에게 보내는 비정한 인물이고, 두 번째 어머니 산파는 바리를 사랑하고 양육하였지만, 바리의 진정한 성장이 아닌 자신의 만족을 위해 행동 하는 인물이며, 세 번째 어머니 토끼는 산파와 달리, 바리의 앞날을 위해 출생신고를 하 고 학교에 보내 교육을 받게 해야 한다고 주장하는 등 양육하는 어머니의 면모가 더 강 하게 드러난 인물이다. 분석 결과, 작품 『프린세스 바리』 속에서 바리의 ‘어머니’ 역할을 하고 있는 세 여성 캐릭터 모두 이중적인 면모를 지니고 있음을 확인하였다.
