Ham Se-deok's research was not actively conducted compared to other artists of his time due to the title of a ‘Writer Who defected to North Korea’ and his works that exude the color of pro-Japanese. However, I would like to examine his work , judging that it is necessary to pay attention to the differences revealed in his work at the same time as showing a remarkable move different from other artists. The concept of ‘tragedy’ to look at was approached from the perspective of tragic situations, inner conflicts, and expressions of tragic consciousness using Terry Eagleton's theory of tragedy because the standards were not clear. Therefore, it can be seen that describes the suffering of fishing villages in the wave of modernization through a spatio-temporal situation in which the natural element of the sea and the contradiction of social structure are intertwined. Furthermore, it was examined that the tragic aspect was revealed through the events unfolding by the inner conflicts of the characters living in it and the tragic defects assigned to it. If this is the first tragic aspect, the second aspect reveals a modern subjective consciousness that pursues a new life force by giving meaning to death and pain rather than collapsing in the situation faced by contrasting the attitudes toward life pursued by his wife and son. The modern subject pursuing reason and personal freedom is bound to be accompanied by tragedy because the world is needed to be sure of itself, but realization after conviction is accompanied by self-alienation in the world. In this respect, Ham Se-deok's can be seen as a description of the consciousness of the modern view of tragedy based on the sense of alienation accompanied by the modern subject and the dialectical rationality mentioned above. Therefore, this study aims to look at "Sanheoguri" using the tragedy theory of Terry Eagleton, a British literary theorist who refuted the traditional issues of tragedy theory and suggested a new concept of tragedy appropriate for our time. To this end, we will first look at Eagleton's theory of tragedy, and based on this, we will grasp the aspect of tragedy revealed in "Sanheoguri". In addition, in order to set the standard for work analysis, we will approach it through two aspects: tragic situation, inner conflict, and expression of tragic consciousness.

함세덕은 그에게 찍힌 ‘월북작가’라는 타이틀과 친일이라는 색채를 풍기는 그의 작품들로 인해 당대 다른 작가들에 비해 연구가 활발히 이루어지지 않았다. 그러나 다른 작가들과 다른 눈에 띄는 행보를 보 이는 것과 동시에 그의 작품에서 드러나는 차별점 또한 주목할 필요가 있다고 판단하여 그의 작품 <산허 구리>를 살펴보고자 한다. <산허구리>를 바라볼 ‘비극성’이라는 개념은 그 기준이 명확하지 않기에 테리 이글턴의 비극론을 빌어 비극적 상황과 내면적 갈등, 비극적 의식의 발현이라는 관점에서 접근하였다. 이에 <산허구리>는 근대화의 물결에 휩싸여 고통받던 어촌 주민들의 고통을 바다라는 자연적 요소와 사 회적 구조의 모순이라는 요소가 얽힌 시공간적 상황을 통해 묘사했음을 알 수 있었다. 나아가 그 안에서 살아가는 인물들의 내면적 갈등과 그에 부여된 비극적 결함에 의해 펼쳐지는 사건을 통해 비극적 양상을 드러내고 있음을 살펴보았다. 이것이 첫 번째 비극적 양상이라면 두 번째 양상은 처와 석이가 추구하는 삶에 대한 태도의 대비를 통해 마주한 상황 속에서 무너지는 것이 아닌 죽음과 고통에 의미를 부여하며 새로운 생명력을 추구하는 근대적 주체 의식을 드러내는 것이다. 이성과 개인적 자유를 추구하는 근대적 인 주체는 비극성을 동반할 수밖에 없는데 이는 스스로 확신하기 위해 세계가 필요하지만, 확신 이후의 실현은 세계 속에서의 자기소외를 동반하기 때문이다. 이러한 점에서 함세덕의 <산허구리>는 근대적 주 체가 동반하는 소외감과 앞서 언급한 변증법적 합리성을 기반으로 근대적 비극관에 대한 의식을 묘사하 는 것이라 볼 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 비극 이론의 전통적인 쟁점에 대해 반박하며 우리 시대에 적절한 새로운 비극 개념을 제시한 영국의 문학 이론가 테리 이글턴의 비극론을 빌어 <산허구리>를 바라보고자 한다. 이를 위해 우선 이글턴의 비극론에 대해 살펴본 후 이를 바탕으로 <산허구리>에서 드러나는 비극 성의 양상을 파악해 볼 것이다. 또한, 작품분석에 대한 기준을 설정하기 위해 비극적 상황과 내면적 갈 등, 비극적 의식의 발현이라는 두 가지 측면을 통해 접근하고자 한다.
