The purpose of this study is to understand the principle of sentence segmentation of hyangga by using the concept of ‘phonological phrase’ in linguistics, and to develop a discussion on the form of hyangga with eight phrases on that basis. The contents discussed in this paper are as follows. First, in Hyangga, a phrase is created by segmenting one utterance or sentence into t wo t o four c hain s ounds. H yangga w ith 4, 8 , and 10 phrases are distinguished from each other not only in the number of phrases but also in the way they are articulated. Second, hyangga with eight phrases differ from hyangga with four and ten phrases in the way it articulates phrases. In that respect, hyangga with eight phrases is recognized as a unique form of hyangga. In addition, in the example of dividing sanaega into those with and without ‘nakgoo’, we can also confirm the existence of hyangga with eight phrases. Third, unlike the solid structure of hyangga with ten phrases, the loose structure of hyangga with eight phrases is presumed to have been relatively convenient in capturing the diverse emotions of the people of the time, and in that respect, hyangga with eight phrases complements hyangga with ten phrases. It is presumed that they were in an adversarial relationship.

본 연구의 목표는 어학에서의 ‘음운구’ 개념을 활용하여 향가의 句 분절 원리를 파악 하고, 그 위에서 8구체 향가의 형식론을 전개하는 것이다. 본고에서 논의된 내용은 다음 과 같다. 첫째, 향가는 하나의 발화 내지 문장을 2개 내지 4개의 소리마디로 분절하여 구를 만든다. 4, 8, 10구체 향가는 구의 수뿐만 아니라 그 분절 방식에 있어서 서로 구별된다. 둘째, 8구체 향가는 4, 10구체 향가와 구 분절 방식을 달리한다. 그런 점에서 8구체 향가는 하나의 독자적인 향가 형식으로 인정된다. 뿐만 아니라, 사뇌가를 ‘낙구’가 있는 것과 없는 것으로 대별하고 있는 예에서 우리는 8구체 향가의 존재감을 또한 확인할 수 있다. 셋째, 10구체의 견고한 3단 구성과 달리 느슨한 3단 구조의 8구체 향가는 당대인의 다양한 정서를 담아내기에 상대적으로 편리했을 것으로 추정되며, 그런 점에서 8구체 향 가는 10구체 향가와 상호보완적 관계에 놓여 있었을 것으로 짐작된다.
