This article introduces the manuscript Joseon Jeonseo, which was censored by the Japanese Government-General of Korea, but could not be published, and examines the characteristics of this material for publication by Japanese colonial era Hanseong Book Press. Only the title of Joseon Jeonseo was confirmed in the introduction of the new book of the Dong-A Ilbo on January 20, 1924, but the publication has not been confirmed until now. The manuscript, which is a total of seven volumes, is an exclusive manuscript for Hanseong Book Press. and consists of 1,500 copies, and is a translation of Samgukyusa, Samguksagi, Haedongyoksa, Balhaego, Dongsagangmok and Daedongginyeon from Old Joseon to the period of the Korean Empire. The translation of this book was done by Jang Do-bin, Hwang Dal-young, Kim Won-geun, Kim Do-hee, Lee Jang-ha, and Park Yong-jip, and it can be seen that it was completed in May 1921, through the preface written by Jang Do-bin. This manuscript shows the overall characteristics of Joseon Jeonseo, as well as the characteristics of this book, which is both a manuscript and a censor. Joseon Jeonseo has an important meaning in that it shows the censorship problem in the process of publishing the history book.

이 글은 일제강점기 ‘한성도서주식회사’에서 출간을 위하여 조선총독부의 검열까지 마쳤으나 발행되지 못한 원고본(原稿本) ｢조선전서(朝鮮全書)｣의 서지 사항을 검토하고 내용적 특징을 살펴본 것이다. ｢조선전서｣는 1924년 1월 20일자 ｢동아일보｣의 ‘신간 소개’를 통해서 발간 소식만 알려졌을 뿐, 지금까지 실본(實本)이 확인되지 않았다. 새로 확인된 원고본 ｢조선전서｣는 출간을 위하여 한성도서주식회사에서 작성된 것이다. 출판사의 전용 원고지로 전체 7권인 ｢조선전서｣는 한국사를 고조선부터 대한제국시기(을미사변 이후)까지로 구분하고, 해당 시기의 역사적 사실을 ｢삼국유사｣, ｢삼국사기｣, ｢해동역사｣, ｢발해고｣, ｢동사강목｣, ｢대동기년｣에서 번역했다. 번역은 장도빈(張道斌), 황달영(黃達永), 김원근(金瑗根), 김도희(金道熙), 이장하(李章夏), 박용집(朴用楫) 등이 맡았다. 원고본에 있는 장도빈의 서문(序文)을 통하여 ｢조선전서｣는 1921년 5월에 완성되었음을 알 수 있다. 하지만 이 책은 한성도서주식회사에서 결국 발간되지 못했다. 이 자료는 ｢조선전서｣의 내용과 성격, 일제강점기 검열 체재에서 한국사 간행의 과정과 관련된 사항을 보여준다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다.
