This study aims to discuss the possibilities and limitations of using generative AI in preaching. First, the author discusses the possibilities and limitations of commercialized generative AI. The most prominent feature of text-generated AI is that it can generate the text that can communicate with humans without the need for complex machine language, using natural language processing to generate text that can communicate with humans with little discomfort, while video-generated AI utilizes human voices and images to produce artificially generated videos that sound like real human speech. These technological advances could make the creation of virtual human preachers or digital twin preachers possible. However, despite these possibilities, generative AI still has functional limitations, such as halucination, where it gives inaccurate answers or states falsehoods as facts, which can lead to various legal and ethical issues such as bias and privacy violations, and philosophical limitations, where it cannot think like a human being despite its formal linguistic capabilities. These possibilities and limitations of generative AI create possibilities and limitations for Christian preaching using AI. Generative AI can help in many areas of sermon preparation, including writing sermon texts and creating sermon videos. The limitations of generative AI are also clear, and the sermons it produces can suffer from errors in textual interpretation, sloppy organization, theological bias, and imprecise application. More fundamentally, AI-generated sermons are limited as a medium of spiritual revelation because they are not the result of spiritual communication with God, but rather a composite of human-produced data. Therefore, the author argues that preachers need to be cognizant of these trade-offs and develop the media literacy to use generative AI.

본 연구는 설교에 있어서 생성형 인공지능의 활용 가능성과 한계를 논의하려는 작업이다. 먼저 상용화된 생성형 인공지능의 가능성과 한계에 관해 살펴본다. 텍스트 생성형 인공지능의 가장 두드러진 특징은 복잡한 기계어를 통하지 않고도 자연어 처리를 통해 거의 불편함이 없이 인간과 의사소통할 수 있는 텍스트를 생성할 수 있다는 것이며, 영상 생성형 인공지능은 인간의 목소리와 이미지를 활용하여 실제 인간이 말하는 것같은 인공지능 영상을 제작해준다. 이러한 기술적 진보는 가상 인간 설교자 혹은 디지털 트윈 설교자의 활동을 가능하게 해 줄 것이다. 그러나 이런 가능성에도 불구하고 생성형 인공지능은 여전히 부정확한 답변을 내어놓거나 잘못된 것을 사실처럼 말하는 할루시네이션과 같은 기능적 한계가 있으며, 이로 인해 편향과 개인정보침해 등 다양한 법적 윤리적 문제를 낳을 수 있으며, 형식 언어적 기능의 탁월함에도 불구하고 인간과 같이 사유할 수 없는 철학적 한계가 있다. 생성형 인공지능이 가진 이런 가능성과 한계는 인공지능을 활용한 기독교 설교에 있어서 가능성과 한계를 배태한다. 생성형 인공지능은 설교를 위한 준비에 있어서 다양한 분야에 서 도움을 줄 수 있으며 설교문 작성, 그리고 이를 활용한 설교 영상 생성까지 가능하게 할 수 있다. 생성형 인공지능의 한계 역시 분명하여 그것이 만들어 내는 설교문은 본문 해석의 오류나 엉성한 구성, 신학적 편향의 가능성이나 구체적이지 않은 적용 등 여러 문제를 가지고 있다. 보다 근본적으로 인공지능이 만들어낸 설교는 하나님과의 영적인 소통의 결과물이 아니라 인간이 생산한 데이터의 조합물이기 때문에 영적 계시의 매체로서 한계가 있다. 따라서 저자는 설교자들이 이러한 장단점을 분명히 인식하고 생성형 인공지 능을 선용하는 미디어 리터러시를 키워야 함을 주장한다.
