The advent of generative AI has sparked inquiries into the identity and role of the preacher. This study does not aim to elucidate the preacher's identity and vocation in a manner that denigrates generative AI while asserting an exclusive functional distinctiveness unique to preachers. Rather, its objective is to harness the creative potentials inherent in the uneasy coexistence and unfamiliar dynamics. To achieve this objective, we initially delve into homiletical criticism and imagination. Homiletical criticism, as advocated by Paul Wilson, underscores the significance of God-centered historical and theological interpretations, particularly through the lens of the quadruple reading—historical, allegorical, moral, and prophetic—which offers profound insights into how preachers' perspective can work. The preaching imagination serves as the engine that enables such critical engagement with preaching. Subsequently, we explore the ethical considerations involved in fostering a culture of hospitality essential for effective homiletical critique and imagination, thereby facilitating the incorporation of diverse perspectives into the pulpit discourse. Cultivating a sense of hospitality is imperative for engaging with the Bible from multifaceted viewpoints that might have been previously disregarded. To practice hospitality in preaching, this study advocates for the adoption of an ethic of listening and an ethic of knowing. The ethic of listening calls for hyper-sensitivity towards marginalized or silenced voices. The ethic of knowing entails the pursuit of epistemological justice, challenging the biases and constraints inherent in prevailing shared values and interpretative frameworks when engaging with biblical texts, thereby inviting active participation and empathetic understanding. The interplay between preaching criticism, imagination, and ethical considerations encourages the preacher to embrace a stance of perpetual improvisation and creativity within the dynamic landscape of preaching. Such a practice fosters a holistic reconceptualization of the preacher's identity as an embodied way of life, wherein preaching transcends mere verbal articulation to become a lived experience.
