The purpose of this paper is to study the circumstances surrounding the appearance of Kim Ju Ae, the daughter of Kim Jong Un, in the North Korean media from the end of 2022, and likelihood of her becoming Kim Jong Un’s next successor. Since first appearing in November 2022 at the site in North Korea for the test launch of Hwasong-17, Kim Jong Un’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae has remained in the spotlight as she continues to participate in North Korea’s official events. The question of whether she will become Kim Jong Un’s successor has recently led to analyses that gave more weight to her than her mother Ri Sol Ju and aunt Kim Yo Jong, both who have been previously shown in the media being at Kim Jong Un’s side. Rumors surrounding Kim Jong Un’s health issues since he gained significant weight since 2016 to some extent support the theory of Kim Ju Ae’s successor theory. However, under North Korea’s succession theory, being from the so-called Mount Paektu bloodline alone does not qualify one as a successor and there are other opinions that focus on Kim Ju Ae’s young age. In the end, Kim Ju Ae’s appearance is most likely being used as a way to promote internal solidarity and internal propaganda that North Korea’s nuclear missile program is being developed for future generations like Kim Ju Ae.

본 논문의 목적은 2022년 말부터 북한 언론에 등장하고 있는 김정은 딸 김주애를 둘러싼 논쟁을 김정일, 김정은 후계체제 구축과정과 비교하면서 김주애의 차기 후계자 가능성을 고찰하는 것이다. 2022년 11월 북 한의 화성-17 발사 현장에 최초로 등장한 김정은 딸 김주애는 북한의 공식적인 행사에 계속 참여하면서 주목 을 받고 있다. 기존 김정은과 함께 있으면서 언론에 노출되었던 어머니 이설주, 고모 김여정보다 최근 비중있 게 다뤄지면서 김주애가 김정은 후계자가 되는 것 아닌가 하는 분석이 따르고 있다. 2016년부터 부쩍 늘어 난 체중과 김정은 건강 이상과 관련한 여러 정황은 김주애 후계자설을 일정부분 뒷받침하고 있다. 그러나 북 한의 후계자론에 따르면 백두혈통만으로 후계자가 될 수 없고 김주애의 나이가 아주 어리다는 다른 의견도 있다. 결국 김주애 등장은 북한의 핵미사일이 김주애 같은 미래세대를 위해 개발하고 있다는 국내 선전과 내 부 결속력을 높이기 위한 방편일 가능성과 함께 북한의 4대세습을공식화에 목적이 있다.
