This article introduces the 20th century elementary world geography textbook 『Chohakdiji』 to Korean language history and summarizes the information, author, and system of each edition to examine the bibliographic aspect of 『Chohakdiji』. It has a similar character to 『Saminpilji』, but it has been briefly mentioned in limited previous discussions such as geography and pedagogy, and the discussion of the data itself has not been made in depth. In the meantime, since the status of the collection of data by edition has not been investigated, it has led to the problem of describing the information of the data differently for each discussion. In order to deal with 『Chohakdiji』 as a Korean language research material in the 20th century, it is necessary to first discuss the characteristics of bibliographical features of data collection information, author, system of contents. Based on the above discussion points, three results were obtained: First, 6 types of the first edition(1906) of 『Chohakdiji』 are possessed in 5 institutions, and 15 types of the second edition(1907) are possessed in 13 institutions. In particular, the National Library of Korea’s collection(first edition) is the data of the Chosun Governor-General’s Library. Second, 『Chohakdiji』 is a book written by Mattie M. H. Miller(1873-1966) alone. The first review condition was that author is a woman missionary who was active between 1906 and 1907, got married to a man whose surname was Miller. The second review condition was that The author's name had been written in the structure of ‘Mrs. Husband’s name’, and she had experience in educating geography. In conclusion, M. H. Miller, the wife of the missionary Edward H. Miller(1873-1966), is the author of 『Chohakdiji』. 『Chohakdiji』 is composed of contents that extend from Joseon to the whole world, and it can be seen that Joseon was dealt with in particular. In addition, at the beginning of each chapter except the first chapter, the map related to the contents is inserted in color, and it is confirmed that Daehan Dido was missed in the three collections. Finally, the composition of ‘Questions’(뭇 말) is a prominent feature o『Chohakdiji』. It is judged to be a textbook designed to enable learners to utilize instruction as a learning tool because it contains questions to be learned along with instruction.

이 글은 20세기 초등 세계 지리 교과서 『초학디지』를 국어사학계에 소개하고 판본 별 소장 정보, 저자, 체제를 정리하여 『초학디지』의 서지적인 측면을 살핀 것이다. 『초학디지』는 『민필지』와 유사한 성격을 가지고 있지만 지리학, 교육학 등 한정된 선행 논의에서 간략하게 언급되었을 뿐, 자료 자체에 대한 논의가 심도 있게 이루어 지지는 못하였다. 그동안 자료의 판본별 소장 현황이 조사되지 않은 탓에 논의들마다 자료의 정보를 다르게 기술하는 문제로 이어졌다. 이 글에서는 향후 20세기 국어 연 구 자료로서 『초학디지』를 다루기 위해서는 ①자료의 현황과 소장 정보, ②저자, ③ 체제 등 서지적인 특징을 우선적으로 논의하는 것이 중요하다고 판단하였다. 위의 논의점들을 중심으로 자료를 살펴 세 가지 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 『초학디지』의 초판본(1906년)은 5개 기관에서 6종을, 재판본(1907년)은 13개 기관에서 15 종을 소장하고 있으며 현재까지 확인한 『초학디지』는 총 21종이라는 점이다. 초판본 가운데 2종은 초판본을 복제한 자료이고, 재판본 가운데 1종은 재판본을 복간한 자료 이다. 특히, 국립중앙도서관 소장본(초판본)이 조선총독부도서관에서 소장했던 자료라 는 점을 책 내부의 표식들을 근거로 밝혀내었다. 둘째, 『초학디지』는 마티 M. H. 밀러(Mattie M. H. Miller, 1873-1966)가 단독으로 저술한 책이라는 점이다. 저자를 밝히 기 위해 기독교계에 남아 있는 선교사 관련 기록을 검토하였다. 1차 조건으로는 여성 이면서 1906-1907년에 활동 중이었고 성이 밀러(Miller)인 남성과 결혼한 선교사라는 점, 2차 조건으로는 남편의 이름 앞에 Mrs.가 붙어 여성의 이름이 표기된 적이 있고 지리 교과를 교육한 경험을 가지고 있어야 한다는 점을 들어 에드워드 H. 밀러 (Edward H. Miller, 1873-1966) 선교사의 부인인 마티 M. H. 밀러를 『초학디지』의 저자로 밝혔다. 특히, 기독교계, 경신중․고등학교의 자료들을 추가적으로 제시하여 결 론을 이끌어냈다. 셋째, 『초학디지』는 내용 전개 순서, 컬러 지도 수록, ‘뭇 말’ 구 성의 측면에서 『민필지』와 구별된다는 점이다. 『초학디지』는 내용이 조선에서 전 세계로 확장되는 방향으로 구성되어 있는데, 특히 조선이 비중 있게 다루어졌음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 제1장을 제외한 각 장의 시작 부분에 내용과 관련된 지도가 컬러로 삽입되어 있는데, 대한 디도는 소장본 3종에 누락되어 있음을 확인하였다. 오늘날의 지도와 비교했을 때 매우 유사할 정도로 정교하게 그려졌다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 특히 ‘뭇 말’ 구성은 『민필지』 초판본과 비교했을 때 두드러지는 『초학디지』의 특징으로, 지도와 함께 학습해야 하는 질문들이 포함되어 있어 학습자들이 학습 도구로 활용할 수 있도록 기획된 교과서로 판단하였다.
