In this study, the functions of ‘-白-’ in Zhouben(周本) Huayanjing(華嚴經) Jeomto-seokdokgugyeol are analyzed, as an attempt to research the history of Korean grammar using Jeomto-seokdokgugyeol materials. The results reveal that the functions of ‘-白-’ in Zhouben Huayanjing Jeomto-seokdokgugyeol is generally consistent with those in Jato-seokdokgugyeol of Huayanjing system, but some variations are observed in distribution depending on the content of individual documents. In addition, two distinctive usages of ‘-白-’ in Zhouben Huayanjing Jeomto-seokdokgugyeol and Jato-seokdokgugyeol were examined in this study. Firstly, an instance of ‘-白-’ combined with three place predicate to honor the direct object is identified in Zhouben Huayanjing Jeomto-seokdokgugyeol, and similar instances are also found infrequently in Jato-seokdokgugyeol. Secondly, ‘-白-’ is rarely used in negative constructions in Zhouben Huayanjing Jeomtoseokdokgugyeol and Jato-seokdokgugyeol, and even if used, it is typically combined only with the predicate of the subordinate clause. The distributional restriction of ‘-白-’ in negative constructions in Zhouben Huayanjing Jeomtoseokdokgugyeol and Jato-seokdokgugyeol provides interesting insights into the generalization process of ‘-白-’.

본 연구에서는 점토석독구결 자료를 활용한 한국어 문법사 연구의 한 시도로서 주 본 『화엄경』 점토석독구결 자료에서 ‘-白-’을 포함하는 것으로 알려진 4종의 구결점 23(·), 31(\), 34(-), 53(i)의 예총 137건을 대상으로 해당 자료에 나타난 ‘-白-’의 기능 을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 주본 『화엄경』 점토석독구결 자료에서 볼 수 있는 ‘-白-’의 기능은 『화엄경􋺸 계통의 자토석독구결 자료에서 볼 수 있는 것에서 크게 벗어나지 않 으나, 개별 문헌의 내용에 따라 일부 분포상의 차이를 보이는 부분도 있음을 확인하 였다. 본 연구에서는 이외에도 주본 『화엄경』 점토석독구결 자료와 자토석독구결 자 료에 나타난 ‘-白-’ 용법 가운데 다음의 두 가지를 중점적으로 검토하였다. 첫째, 주 본 『화엄경』 점토석독구결 자료에서는 세 자리 서술어에 결합하여 직접 목적어를 높이는 ‘-白-’의 예가 보이는데, 자토석독구결 자료에서도 비슷한 예를 드물게나마 찾 을 수 있다. 둘째, 주본 『화엄경』 점토석독구결 자료와 자토석독구결 자료에서는 ‘-白-’ 이 부정 구문에 잘 쓰이지 않으며, 쓰이더라도 부정 용언에는 잘 결합하지 않는다. 주 본 『화엄경』 점토석독구결 자료와 자토석독구결 자료에서 확인되는 부정 구문에서의 분포 제약은 ‘-白-’의 일반화 과정에 관한 흥미로운 논점을 제공한다.
