A new photoelectrochemical cell was constructed by combining photocatalytic degradation with reverse electrodialysis (RED) for recovering energy from wastewater. In this study, a RED cell for efficient electricity generation from the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCL) is developed. A TiO2/Ti mesh photoanode was developed and optimized. The potential difference generated from the RED stack accelerated the separation of photoinduced holes and electrons on the photoanode, which enhances TC-HCL degradation. The performance of the photoelectrochemical cell was investigated systematically under both open circuit voltage (OCV) and an applied external resistance of 50 Ω (ER-50) conditions. During a 5-hour operation, ER-50 demonstrated a 56.6% degradation efficiency with maximum power density of 16.97 mW/m2. In addition, ER-50 surpassed the OCV condition with a degradation efficiency of 30.57%. Therefore, by leveraging the strengths of both the technologies, it is possible to develop an advanced treatment method for the refractory organic pollutant.
