Research on Catechist John Kim Ki-ho, who worked hard to rebuild the Catholic Church and evangelize Catholicism throughout the late Joseon Dynasty and the opening of ports, was mainly conducted based on Bonggyojasul, and there was a lack of contrast and comparative research with materials from other churches. In this article, by reviewing the data on Kim Ki-ho once again, we were able to newly confirm facts that had been missed before. As a result of comparing the records of Catechist John Kim Hyung-ok in the missionary[Father Calais, Bishop Blanc, Father Robert]'s letter and the testimony[Pyeongin Sungyoja ShibokJaepanlok, Byungin Chimyeong Sajeok, Byeongin-bakhae Sungyoja Jeungeonlok] of believers with the materials of Bonggyojasul and genealogy, his name, family relationship, and specific actions were consistent. From this, it can be seen that Kim Hyung-ok and Kim Ki-ho are the same people. In addition, it was confirmed that Catechist Kim Hyung-ok=Kim Ki-ho played various roles as the landlord of the missionary, a Korean language teacher, a servant, an evangelist, a catechism writer.

조선후기·개항기에 걸쳐 천주교회의 재건과 천주교 전교에 힘썼던 김 기호 요한 회장에 대한 연구는 주로 『봉교자술』에 근거하여 진행되었고, 다른 교회측 자료와의 대조·비교 연구가 부족했다. 이 글에서는 김기호에 대한 자료를 다시 한번 검토함으로써 이전까지 놓치고 있었던 사실을 새 롭게 확인할 수 있었다. 선교사제[칼레, 블랑, 로베르]의 서한과 신자의 증언[병인 순교자 시복 재판록, 병인치명사적, 병인 순교자 시복재판록]에 나오는 ‘김형옥 요한 회장’ 기록과 『봉교자술』·족보 자료를 비교한 결과, 그의 이름[字]과 가족 관계, 구체적 행적 등이 일치하고 있었다. 이를 통해 김형옥과 김기호가 동 일 인물임을 알 수 있다. 또한, 김형옥=김기호 회장이 선교사제의 집주인 과 조선어 선생, 복사, 전교회장, 교리서 저술가 등의 다양한 역할을 맡아 수행했다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.
