The study of folk music, that is, folk musicology, has developed within Korean musicology. There are many points of contact between folk musicology and folklore since both study the folk music and culture. I will examine the subject, category, and methods of folk musicology and will suggest the future methods of the discipline. Folk musicology has been focused on the music of the professional musicians not the folk music practiced in the life of the common people. The subject of the folk musicology should focus on the music culture which is the result of the thoughts, faith, emotion, feeling, and practice of the people. The study should be focus on the ‘folk identity’, not the ‘artistic character’ of the music. The participant-observation in the field research is the most important fact in order to explore the folk identity of the folk music. The musical ethnography based on the intensive field research is the fundamental for the practical interpretation. The folk musicology should be turned to the interpretation of the human practice, the human who make and appreciate the music. The ultimate aim of the music research is the understanding of the humanity through music.

국악학에서 민속음악을 연구 대상으로 하는 민속음악학 연구는 그 성과가 상당히 축적되었다. 민속음악학은 민속음악문화를 연구한다는 점에서 민속학과 접점을 찾을 수 있다. 이글에서는 민속 음악을 연구 대상으로 하는 민속음악학의 연구 대상, 범위, 방법 등에 대한 검토를 하여 향후 민속음 악학의 연구 방향을 제시했다. 민속음악학의 연구 대상은 실제적으로 민중의 삶 속에서 영위되었던 민속음악이 아닌 전문음악 가가 연주하는 민속악에 집중했다. 민속악은 판소리, 산조, 잡가, 범패 등의 전문음악가 음악을 포 함하는 개념이고, 1970년대 이후 민속음악학 연구는 민속악에 집중되었다. 민속음악은 민속성, 즉 일상성, 전승성(전통성), 공동체성을 갖춘 음악을 의미한다. 소위 민속의 범주에 속하는 민요, 농악, 굿, 탈놀이, 불교 음악 등에 관한 연구는 이들 음악의 ‘예술성’보다는 ‘민속성’을 연구하는 방향으로 진행되어야 할 것이다. 민속음악의 민속성을 연구하기 위해서는 연구자의 직접적인 현장 연구를 통한 참여관찰이 중요 하다. 외부자의 시각에 의한 단발적ㆍ일시적인 현지 조사에 의한 자료 수집은 잘못된 정보와 오류 를 양산할 수 있고, 심지어는 민속에 관한 ‘환상’을 조장할 수 있다. 현장 연구를 이후 이루어지는 음 악민족지는 음악문화의 실체적 해석을 위한 밑바탕이 된다. 타인에 의해 수집된 자료를 대상으로 하는 음악 분석은 과거의 전문가 집단의 복합적이고 함축적인 음악의 개념을 단순하고 평면적인 논 리로 탈바꿈시키는 결과로 이어지는 경우가 많았다. 그리고 많은 음악 분석은 기존의 분석 이론을 연역적으로 추론하여 납득하기 어려운 결론을 도출하는 경우가 많았다. 향후 민속음악학 연구는 음 악을 만들고 듣고 느끼는 인간 행위에 대한 해석이 되어야 한다. 음악 연구의 궁극적 목적이 음악을 통한 인간성의 탐구라면 음악 연구는 단순하고 기계적인 음악 분석이 아닌 복합적인 문화 해석이 이루어져야 할 것이다.
