This study conducted in-depth interviews with ‘apartisans,’ individuals who are politically non-partisan yet not apolitical. Our objective was to gain a deeper understanding of the composition and characteristics of South Korea's apartisan population, reasons for their detachment from political parties, potential for reestablishing alignments, and their views on electoral participation. The apartisan group includes pure nonpartisans, consistent independent leaners, and inconsistent independent leaners. Disappointment with the Democratic Party stems from policy failures, moral disillusionment, and leadership issues, while dissatisfaction with the conservative party relates to unilateralism, unconditional support for the president, and one-sided diplomatic policy. Proposed improvements involve effective policies, collaborative party attitudes, generational change, leadership restructuring (Democratic Party), and responsible government oversight (Conservative Party). Lastly, apartisans have indicated their readiness to engage in the upcoming election, contingent upon a party proposing policies that effectively enhance their quality of life. They also expressed a keen interest in supporting a third party, contingent upon its alignment with their values and its ability to establish a significant presence.
