Unlike the way missions started in many Southeast Asian countries through missionary agencies, missions of the Korean Protestant Church was initiated through denominational efforts. At the founding of the General Assembly of the Korean Presbyterian Church in 1913 they celebrated the launch of the assembly, made a resolution to start foreign missions, and sent three missionaries to Shandong, China. This was the beginning of the Korean church’s mission to China and its first true crosscultural missionary effort. This means the Korean church’s foreign missions was launched through the denomination. According to the annual missionary data reported by the Korea World Missions Association (KWMA), the number of denominational missionaries steadily grew over the years while number of missionaries associated with non-denominational missionary agencies either stagnated or fell. This indicates that denominations will continue to play a critical role in foreign missions of the Korean church in the future. However, recent data by the KWMA also suggest that prospects of the Korean church’s missions is uncertain. For the Korean church’s mission to be sustainable, the denomination must continue to mobilize new missionaries and develop missionary programs appropriate for our age and culture. Above all, it is time for the denomination to conduct biblical missions and surrender the leadership of missions to God(missio Dei).

동남아시아 지역의 많은 나라들이 선교단체에 의해 선교가 시작되었던 것에 반하여, 한국의 개신교 선교는 교단의 해외 선교로부터 비롯되었 다. 1913년 한국장로교회는 창립총회의 조직을 기념하면서 해외 선교를 결의하고, 중국 산둥성(山東省)에 세 명의 선교사를 파송하였다. 이를 한국 교회 중국선교의 시작이자 진정한 의미의 타 문화권 선교의 시작이라고 보 는데, 그렇다면 한국교회의 해외 선교도 교단 선교가 열었다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 한국세계선교협의회(KWMA)가 매년 발표하는 선교 현황에 따르면, 교단 소속 선교사는 그동안 꾸준히 증가하였고, 상대적으로 초교파 선교단 체 선교사는 성장이 더디거나 감소하였다. 이러한 사실은 앞으로의 한국교 회 해외 선교도 교단 선교가 매우 중요한 역할을 감당해야 함을 방증한다. 하지만, 한국세계선교협의회의 최근 통계는 앞으로 한국교회 선교가 가는 길이 그리 밝지만은 않음을 보여주고 있다. 한국교회가 지속 가능한 선교 를 이어 나갈 수 있으려면 교단 해외 선교가 새로운 선교 헌신자를 계속 발 굴하고, 오늘의 시대와 문화에 맞는 사역을 개발하며, 무엇보다도 성경적 이고 하나님께 선교의 주도권을 내어드리는 선교(missio Dei)로 나아가야 하는 시점임을 보여준다.
