The purpose of this study is to examine the type of missionary Hyo-won Bang was, who was sent to Shantung, China, by the General Assembly of the Korean Presbyterian Church in 1917 and served as a missionary in Shantung for 18 years until his return home in 1935. Hyo-won Bang wrote extensively about the Shantung mission, not only during his time in Shantung, but also during his ministry in Shanghai beginning in 1936. In 1920, Joseonyasokyoseohoe(朝鮮耶穌敎書會) published his report on the mission to Laiyang, Shantung Province, China. In 1921, Hyowon Bang contributed a "Report on the Mission in Laiyang, Shantung, China" to The Christian Times 『基督申報』. In 1922, he wrote a series of six articles entitled "The Situation of the Shantung Laiyang Mission" in The Christian Times 『基督申報』. In 1923 he again wrote a series of articles entitled "Missionary News." He also wrote about the missionary situation in China and the Shantung Mission in a magazine called The Mustard 『게자씨』, even while serving in Shanghai, China. This study will examine these writings to identify Hyo-won Bang as a missionary in the following ways. First, Hyo-won Bang was a pastoral missionary. Second, Hyo-won Bang was an evangelistic missionary. And third, Hyowon Bang was a dedicated missionary. Now the Korean church and its members must continue the missionary spirit that flows through the ministries of early Korean Presbyterian missionaries like Hyo-won Bang.

본 연구는 1917년에 중국 산동(山東)으로 한국 장로회 총회의 파송을 받고 1935년에 귀국할 때까지 18년 동안을 산동 선교사로 사역한 방효원 (方孝元)이 어떤 선교사였는가를 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 방효원은 산 동에서 사역할 때뿐만 아니라 1936년부터 상해(上海)에서 사역하는 동안 에도 산동 선교에 관한 많은 글을 남겼다. 1920년에 조선야소교서회(朝鮮 耶穌敎書會)는 방효원의 『중화민국 산동성 래양 선교 보고』를 발행하였다. 방효원은 1921년에 『基督申報』에 “중국 산동 래양 선교 소식”을 기고한다. 1922년에는 『基督申報』에 6회에 걸쳐서 “산동 래양 선교 상황”이라는 제목 으로 기고한다. 1923년에도 『基督申報』에 “선교 소식”이라는 제목으로 기 고한다. 또한 그는 중국 상해에서 사역하는 때에도 『게자씨』라는 잡지에 중 국의 선교 상황과 산동 선교에 대한 글을 남겼다. 본 연구는 이런 글들을 고찰하여 방효원이 다음과 같은 선교사임을 밝히고자 한다. 첫째로 방효원은 목회적 선교사였다. 둘째로 방효원은 복음적 선교사 였다. 셋째로 방효원은 헌신적 선교사였다. 이제 한국교회와 온 성도들은 방효원과 같은 초기 한국장로교회 선교사들의 사역을 통해서 흐르는 선교 정신을 이어가야 한다.
