Gimhae is a place that has received both expectations and concerns due to the recent explosive increase in migrants. Migrants face conflicts in economic, social and cultural aspects with indigenous peoples that arose in the process of settling in Korean society. In addition, migrants who go beyond this conflict face changed selves by practicing a new embedded lifestyle. At first glance, the unfamiliar environments and conditions in life that migrants have to pass through are seen as threats to their lives, but in fact, the backside develops into a new way of adaptation through identity change and overturning. Only when we pay attention to this process can Gimhae be found to become a space that converts from a peripheral position to an actor's subject. This study deals with the process of discovering new identities that foreign migrants in Korean society have not yet thought of in the process of experiencing the culture of unfamiliar lands as a concrete example. In particular, we tried to look at how migrants in the non-metropolitan space of Gimhae change their identity through transnational life through the concept of change and subversion. The main methods of this study were in-depth interviews with migrants and their communities and participation observations at various facilities they use. The countries of origin of the in-depth interview subjects were Uzbekistan, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Japan, and Nepal, and the total number of subjects was 10. The interview focused not only on confirming the basic migration history of individuals, but also on confirming the efforts and experiences they made to enter the exotic space of Gimhae City and adapt to society. In addition, through this experience, they were interested in and analyzed the identity and cultural characteristics that each interviewee felt. Gimhae is a place where the intersection of transnational space and regional specialization occurs in the lives of migrants, and it is also a space where the intersection of gender and class occurs. Furthermore, Gimhae is a space that realizes the movement of the class from the perspective of agent nature and the space in which a new identity change occurs and operates. In that sense, Gimhae is a space that enabled migrants to struggle in their lives and at the same time becomes a space for each migrant to discover a new identity.

경남 김해는 최근 이주민의 폭발적인 증가로 기대와 우려를 동시에 받고 있는 곳이다. 이주민들은 정착 과정에서 일어난 선주민들과의 경제적 사회적 문화적 측면의 갈등을 마주한다. 또 이러한 갈등을 넘어선 이주민들은 새롭게 배태된 삶의 양식을 실천함으로 써 변화된 자신을 마주하게 된다. 이주민들이 통과해야 하는 삶의 낯선 환경들과 조건들 은 일견 그들 삶의 위협으로 비춰지지만 사실상 그 이면은 정체성의 변화와 전복 (overthrow)을 통해 새로운 방식의 적응이라는 모습으로 전개된다. 우리가 이러한 과정 을 주목할 때에 비로소 김해는 이주민들에게 주변부 위치에서 행위자 주체로 전환되는 공간이 되는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 한국 사회 해외 이주민들이 낯선 땅의 문화를 경험하는 과정에서 미처 생각하지 못했던 자신들의 새로운 정체성을 발견해 나가는 과정을 구체적 사례로 다루 고 있다. 특히 김해라는 비수도권 공간의 이주민들이 초국적 삶을 통하여 자신들의 정체 성이 어떻게 변화해나가는가를 변화와 전복이라는 개념을 통해 바라보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 주요 방법으로는 이주민들에 대한 심층면접과 이들이 이용하는 다양한 커 뮤니티에서의 참여관찰을 진행하였다. 심층면접 대상자들의 출신 국가는 우즈베키스 탄, 러시아, 우크라이나, 카자흐스탄, 베트남, 일본, 네팔이며 총 대상자는 10명이다. 인 터뷰는 개인의 기본적인 이주사를 확인하는데 그친 것이 아니라 김해시라는 이국적 공 간에 들어와 사회에 적응하기 위해 어떠한 노력과 경험을 했는가를 확인하는데 집중했 다. 또한 이 경험을 통해 면접대상자 각자가 느끼게 된 정체성과 문화적 특성은 무엇인가 에도 관심을 가지며 분석하였다. 김해는 이주민의 삶 가운데 초국적 공간과 지역적 특화의 교차를 발견하게 되는 곳이 며, 젠더와 계층의 교차가 일어나는 공간이 되기도 한다. 더 나아가 행위자성의 관점에서 계층의 이동을 실현하는 공간이자 새로운 정체성의 변화가 일어나고 작동되는 현재 진 행의 공간이기도 하다. 그런 의미에서 김해는 이주민들 삶의 투쟁을 가능하게 한 공간임 과 동시에 이주민들 각자의 새로운 정체성 발견의 공간이 된다.
