The purpose of this study is to examine the perception of Seoul block printed novels by westerners Plancy, Courant, Aston, Allen, and Landis who stayed in Korea in the late 19th century. The results of the study are summarized and presented as follows. First, Plancy, Courant and Aston recognized Seoul block printed novels as cultural assets worth preserving and studying. Aston, Allen, and Landis attempted to understand nationality through Korean narrative literatures. For this reason, they were able to form an awareness of Seoul block printed novels. Second, Plancy and Courant perceive Seoul block printed novels as cultural assets worthy of preservation and study. Aston and Courant perceive as vulgar popular literature based on Chinese literature. Allen perceives commercial publications targeting westerners. And Landis perceives object of study about Far East Asia for missionary purposes. Third, Aston and Courant's perception of light edition novels has limitations due to lack of expertise. But Plancy, Allen and Landis can be given the significance of proving the world literary value of novels in the late 19th century.

이 연구의 목적은 19세기 말 한국에 머물렀던 서구인 Plancy⋅Courant⋅Aston⋅Allen⋅Landis의 경판본 소설에 대한 인식을 고찰하는 것이다. Aston⋅Courant⋅Plancy은 극동학 전공자였으며 Aston과 Courant은 한·중·일의 문자·서적·인쇄와 관련된 전문적인 연구를 수행한 바 있다. 또한 Allen과 Landis는 여러 편의 한국 설화를 영역했다. 따라서 Plancy⋅Courant⋅Aston⋅Allen⋅Landis의 경판본 소설에 대한 인식은 한글 목판본의 희소성과 특수성에 대한 인지와 한국 서사문학을 통한 민족성의 이해를 토대로 형성될 수 있었다. Plancy와 Courant은 경판본 소설을 보존과 연구의 가치가 있는 문화재로 인식했다. Plancy는 한국에 머무는 동안 경판본 소설을 포함하여 많은 수의 문화재를 수집했으며 Courant은 경판본 소설에 대한 연구를 수행하여 BIBLIOGRAPHIE CORÉENNE1~3을 간행했기 때문이다. 그리고 Aston이 쓴 “COREAN POPULAR LITERATURE”과 Courant이 쓴 BIBLIOGRAPHIE CORÉENNE1에 제시된 내용을 참고했을 때 Aston과 Courant은 경판본 소설을 중국 문학에 기반한 통속적 대중문학으로 인식했다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 Allen은 경판본 소설을 영역하여 KOREAN TALES를 간행하여 절판되어 재간행했다. 그러므로 Allen은 경판본 소설을 서구인을 대상으로 한 상업적 출판물로 인식했다. Landis의 경우 선교를 위한 극동 아시아에 대한 연구의 대상으로 인식했기에 경판 <임장군전>을 로 번안했다. Aston과 Courant의 경판본 소설에 대한 인식에는 전문성이 결여된 한계가 있다. 그러나 Plancy⋅Allen⋅Landis은 19세기 말 경판본 소설의 세계 문학적 가치를 입증한 의의를 부여할 수 있다.
