Gyeongpo is a lagoon reconstructed from a natural landscape feature into a cultural space that has been praised as a scenic spot in East Asia. Gyeongpo has a variety of alternate names, including Gyeongho (鏡湖), Gamho (鑑湖), Gunjaho[ji] (君子湖[池]), Eojin-gae, and Gyeongpoho (鏡浦湖), each with its own symbols and continuing meanings in cultural history. The most common names in the record are Gyeongpo and Gyeongho. The name Gyeongpo was used first. Po (浦) is a Korean term for a place where seawater flows in and out of rivers, and Gyeongpo is a lagoon formed by this phenomenon. The name with po was formed first, reflecting the early formation of the lagoon, which Gyeongpo represents. The name Gyeongpodae (鏡浦臺) also comes from Gyeongpo. Gyeongho symbolizes the lake and refers to the Gyeongho (Gamho) role of Hajijang (賀知章) in Chinese cultural history. It has two overlapping meanings. It is used as the most common name besides Gyeongpo in the records and old maps of the late Goryeo and Joseon periods. Gunja-ho[ji] and Eojin-gae are names that have been handed down by the local people, meaning having a good heart that gives benefits and does not commit evil. Gunja-ho[ji] is the reading of the Chinese characters corresponding to Eojin-gae. Gyongpo-ho is a name that includes references to both the lagoon and the lake, reflecting seawater flowing into the river. Gyongpo-ho is thus a name heavily fraught with all these meanings. It may be presumed that when Gyeongpodae emerged as a landmark of Gwandong Eight Views (關東八景), the name Gyeongpoho would also have had the meaning of the lake where Gyeongpodae is located.

‘경포’는 자연경관에서 문화 공간으로 재구성되며 동아시아의 명승으로 칭송받 아 왔다. ‘경포’는 ‘鏡湖ㆍ鑑湖ㆍ君子湖[池]ㆍ어진-개ㆍ鏡浦湖’ 등의 다양한 異稱이 있다. 각각의 湖名은 문화사의 흐름 속에서 상징이 부여되며 면면히 그 의미가 이 어진다. 호명에 접두어로 쓰인 ‘鏡ㆍ鑑’은 맑다는 의미의 관용적 표현이고, 현재까 지 찾아지는 문헌에서 단연 많이 등장하는 호명은 ‘경포․경호’이다. 가장 먼저 사용된 호명은 ‘경포’이다. ‘포’는 우리말 ‘개’로 강이나 내에 조수가 드나드는 곳이고, ‘경포’는 이런 현상으로 형성된 潟湖다. ‘포’라는 명칭이 먼저 붙 은 것은 석호가 형성되는 수순에 따른 것이다. ‘경포’는 석호를 대표하는 상징성을 담고 있고, 鏡浦臺의 명칭도 ‘경포’에서 연유한다. ‘경호’는 담수호의 이미지와 중국 문화사에 등장하는 賀知章 ‘경호(감호)’의 상징 이 함께 담긴 호명이다. 경호는 이러한 두 가지 의미로 혼용되었다. 고려말∼조선 시대의 기록과 古地圖에 ‘경포’와 함께 가장 많은 호명으로 쓰이게 된다. ‘군자호[지]ㆍ어진-개’는 유익함을 내어 주되 해악을 끼치지 않는 군자의 덕을 가졌다는 뜻으로 지역민들에게 오랫동안 전승되어 온 호명이고, ‘군자호[지]’는 ‘어 진-개’의 뜻이 반영된 한자어이다. ‘경포호’는 석호 생성 원리가 담겨 고착된 호명인 ‘경포’, 내륙에서 보이는 담수 호 이미지와 하구 쪽 포의 이미지 등 자연의 섭리에 따른 현상과 보이는 형상, 그리고 경포대에 간여하는 원 호명까지 포괄ㆍ복합적으로 담아 선조들이 숙고 끝에 창안한 호명이다. 그리고 정황적 주장이긴 하지만, 경포대가 關東八景의 명소로 부상하면서 ‘경포대가 위치한 호수’라는 또 다른 의미의 ‘경포호’로도 불렸을 것이다.
