Until just 30 years ago, Japan was considered the only advanced nation and an economic powerhouse in Asia. Going to Japan to learn technology or study abroad was considered a ‘natural’ choice. However, recent perceptions, especially among the MZ generation in Korea and Japan, reveal a shift in attitudes. Statements like ‘Korea is the object of admiration’ or ‘After coming to Japan, I realized Japan is not what it cracked up to be, and Korea is more advanced’ indicate a change in perception. Given the lack of specific research on recent changes in perceptions toward Japan, this study surveyed university professors to explore their views on Japan. Both surveys and interviews were conducted to ensure comprehensive research. The survey results indicate that Korean professors still perceive Japan as an advanced country and recommend Korean students to study there. However, there has been a shift in the perception that studying in Japan does not necessarily mean learning something advanced that differs from what people previously thought. While Japan’s technological prowess is considered slightly superior, there is no longer a perception of a significant gap between Japan and South Korea.

불과 30년 전까지만 하더라도 일본은 아시아 유일의 선진국, 경제 대국으로서 일본에 기술을 배우러 가고, 유학을 가는 것은 ‘당연한 일’로 여겨졌다. 그러나 한 일 양국의 MZ세대를 중심으로 ‘한국이 동경의 대상이다’라든지, ‘일본에 와서 보 니 별것도 없고, 한국이 더 선진국이다’라는 말을 듣게 되어 인식의 변화를 느낄 수 있다. 이상과 같은 최근 일본에 대한 인식변화를 구체적으로 밝힌 연구가 없다는 점에 서 본 연구에서는 대학 교수들을 대상으로 일본에 대한 인식조사를 시행하였다. 성공적인 연구를 진행하기 위해 설문조사와 인터뷰 조사를 함께 실시하였다. 조사 결과 한국의 교수들은 일본을 여전히 선진국으로 인식하고 있어, 우리나라 학생들의 일본 유학을 추천은 하지만, 일본에서 공부하더라도 예전처럼 선진적인 것을 배울 수 있는 곳으로 생각하지는 않는다는 인식의 전환이 이루어졌다. 일본 의 기술력 또한 우리나라보다 조금 우세하다고 생각하지만 따라잡지 못할 정도로 큰 격차가 있다고는 생각하지 않는다는 인식도 확인할 수 있었다.
