The purpose of this study is to examine the impact on economic exchange and economic growth between Korea and Japan through Seo Gap-ho, a Korean-Japanese entrepreneur. The research results are as follows. First, the view of Korean-Japanese researchers toward Chairman Seo Gap-ho appears to be that they highly value his contribution to enhancing Korea’s status, such as the donation of the Korean Embassy in Japan, the expansion of Sakamoto Spinning Company into his home country, and his contribution to the economic development of his home country. Second, the evaluation of Korean-Japanese toward Chairman Seo Gap-ho is that it is the first investment and contribution to their home country. Third, the image of Seo Gap-ho, a Korean-Japanese entrepreneur in Korea, was divided into two aspects: positive and negative. Fourth, the evaluation of Chairman Seo Gap-ho in Japan played an important role in the establishment of the Korea-Japan Economic Association and the exchange of Korean-Japanese entrepreneurs. In conclusion, Chairman Seo Gap-ho was a person who stood at the center of Korea-Japan relations, supporting official and unofficial routes during the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan in the 1960s.

이 연구의 목적은 서갑호(徐甲虎)라는 재일동포 기업가를 통해 한일경제교류와 한국 경제성장에 미친 영향 등 모국공헌을 살펴보는 데 있다. 기존 연구들은 서갑 호 회장의 모국공헌에 초점을 둔 것 연구가 많았는데 본 연구는 재일동포 시각에 서 바라본 모국투자와 한국경제 발전에 공헌한 재일동포 기업가, 한국인의 관점에 서 바라본 재일동포 기업가, 일본인의 관점에서 바라본 한일관계 개선에 앞장선 재일동포 기업가 등 세 가지 측면에서 살펴보았다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 서갑호 회장에 대한 재일동포 연구자의 시각은 주일한국대사관의 기증, 사카모토 방적 회사의 모국진출과 모국 경제발전 공헌 등 한국의 위상 제고에 기 여한 바를 높이 평가하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 재일동포의 서갑호 회장에 대한 평가는 재일동포 기업가의 자본에 의한 최초의 본격적인 모국투자로, 당시 한국에서는 ‘금의환향의 재일동포 기업가’로 주목받았다. 셋째, 한국 내 재일동포 기업가 서갑호에 대한 이미지는 긍정적 측면과 부정적 측면의 두 가지로 나타났 다. 넷째, 일본 내 서갑호 회장에 대한 평가는 한일경제협회의 설립과 한일 경제인 교류에 중심적인 역할을 담당했다는 점 등이었다. 결론적으로 서갑호 회장은 1960년대 한일 공식적인 외교관계가 성립되어가는 과정에서 비공식적인 루트를 지원하고 구축하였으며 한일 간 긴급 상황 발생 시 대응할 수 있는 비공식 루트, 비공식적 채널, 비공식조직을 가동한 한일관계의 중 심적 위치에 서 있었던 인물로 평가되고 있다.
