Modern-contemporary history museums have increased since 2000 in Korean Society with the boom of history museum which started in the 1990’s around the world. They are closely related to the recent discussions about public history because it is museums that have been the major subjects of public history research. Lately oral history exhibitions have been introduced to modern-contemporary history museum since the oral narratives of witnesses who experienced major historical events have been collected through oral history interviews. This article seeks to examine the present situation of modern-contemporary history museums, discuss the issues involved in oral history exhibitions, and suggest alternatives. For this, the first part of the paper looks into 25 modern-contemporary museums in terms of opening year, major theme, location, types of administration whose visitors are more than 100,000 in 2020, out of which 7 museums turn out to have oral history exhibitions. The types of oral history exhibitions are illustrated and their effects are analyzed to offer the more elaborated orientations for oral history exhibition. Lastly, several issues generated in oral history exhibitions will be discussed in relation to public history, pointing out how oral history exhibitions contribute to the practice of public history in museums.

한국사회에서 2000년대 전후로 일어난 역사박물관 붐은 최근 근현대역사박물관의 증가로 나타나고 있다. 근현대역사박물관의 성장과 2010년대 말부터 논의되고 있는 공공역사는 매우 밀접한 관계가 있다. 왜냐하면 공공역사 연구에서 가장 많이 분석 되어온 것이 바로 박물관이기 때문이다. 그런데 근현대역사박물관은 당대의 사건을 경험한 목격자들의 존재로 인해 구술 전시가 도입되고 있다. 그래서 이 연구는 공공역 사와 관련하여 근현대역사박물관의 구술 전시의 현황을 파악하고 구술 전시에 연관된 쟁점들을 논의하고 대안을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 최근 근현대역사박물관의 현 황과 추세를 정리하고 연간 관람객 10만 이상인 근현대역사박물관 25개 중 7개의 구 술 전시 상황을 파악한다. 이 사례들을 통하여 현재 활용되고 있는 구술 전시의 유형 과 효과를 논의하고 구술 전시의 문제점들을 진단하고 전시 방향을 제안한다. 마지막 으로 공공역사 관점에서 구술 전시의 쟁점들을 논의하고 근현대역사박물관에서 구술 전시가 공공역사에 기여하는 바를 밝힌다.
