Poet Cho Ji-hoon(1920-1968) evaluated Suun Choi Je-woo, the founder of Donghak, as the epitome of Korean thought. The Korean people have a high capacity for contemplation, and Korean thought contains “compromise and fusion, acceptance and return” as a common way of thinking. Korean thought started from the Dangun faith, which reflected humanism and democracy, developed into a patriotic and national religion from Buddhism, and was succeeded to modern times from Donghak, forming the genealogy of Korean thought. Cho Ji-hoon understood Donghak through his work exploring the origins and genealogy of Korean thought and its universal logic, and sought to establish Su-un as a great figure in the history of Korean thought. This study sought to re-perceive Donghak and Choi Jewoo in the context of Korean thought, based on Cho Ji-hoon’s perception of Donghak. His conceptual understanding of Korean thought, its logical characteristics, evaluation of Choi Je-woo, Donghak and its contemporary significance were investigated, and as a result, humanism, vitalism, and communitarianism were presented.

시인 조지훈(1920-1968)은 동학의 창도자 수운 최제우(1824-1864)를 한국사상의 전형으로 평가하였다. 한민족은 높은 사색적 소질을 갖추고 있으며, 한국사상은 “절충과 융합, 수용과 환원”을 공통된 사유방식으로 담고 있다. 한국사상은 인본주의와 민주주의가 투영된 단군신앙에서 출발했으며 불교에서 호국적이며 민족적인 종교로서 발전하였고, 동학에서 근대적으로 계승하면서 한국사상의 계보가 형성되었다. 조지훈은 한국사상의 기원과 계보 그리고 그 보편적 논리를 탐구하는 작업에서 동학을 이해하고 있으며 수운을 한국 사상사에서 위대한 인물로 정립하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 조지훈의 동학 인식을 근거로 동학과 최제우를 한국사상의 맥락에서 재인식하고자 하였다. 조지훈의 한국사상의 개념 이해와 그 논리적 특색과 최제우에 대한 평가와 동학과 최제우의 현재성을 규명하였고 그 결과로서 인간주의, 생명주의, 공동체주의를 제시하였다.
