The purpose of this study was to identify the sense of place of Euljiro, a so-called ‘retro place’, and suggest directions for cultural urban regeneration. A qualitative case study method was applied, including fieldwork and in-depth interviews. The study showed the historical background of Euljiro played a major role in the formation of Euljiro's sense of retro place. Young artists were attracted to Euljiro, which was declining due to changes in industrial structure, and gave a retro identity through cultural adaptation. Euljiro's sense of retro place has three main characteristics. First, morphologically, it appeared by preserving and combining objects and contexts of the existing place in a new place. Second, culturally, it formed the art scene of Euljiro by giving the existing space an identity as an artistic place. Third, aesthetically, it harmonized the nostalgic atmosphere of the past with the modern atmosphere. However, public organizations intervention based on a superficial understanding of the area led to gentrification, weakened local identity, and threatened the sustainability of its sense of place. The preservation of Euljiro’s local identity created through its people and history therefore requires careful public intervention that reflects the unique values and charms of the area. This study is significant in that it revealed the specific aspects of the sense of retro place through a qualitative approach to the concept of sense of place, which had been approached only quantitatively. It also expanded the scope of the retro concept from design and fashion to the concept of a sense of place.

본 연구는 ‘레트로적 장소’로 불리는 을지로의 장소성을 규명하여 문화적 도시 재생의 방향을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 현장조사, 심층 인터 뷰를 비롯한 질적 사례연구방법을 적용하였다. 연구 결과, 을지로의 레트로적 장 소성 형성에는 을지로의 역사적 배경이 주요한 역할을 하였음을 확인할 수 있었 다. 산업 구조 변화에 따라 쇠락한 을지로에 유입된 젊은 예술가들은 문화적 전 유 행위를 통해 을지로에 레트로적 정체성을 부여했다. 을지로의 레트로적 장소 성의 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기존 장소의 사물과 맥락을 새로운 장소에 보 존·결합하여 나타난 형태적 특성이었다. 둘째, 기존 장소에 예술적 장소라는 정 체성을 부여한 예술 씬(scene)이라는 문화적 특성이었다. 셋째, 향수를 불러일으 키는 과거의 정취와 현대적 장소의 정취가 조화를 이루며 나타난 미학적 특성이 었다. 그러나 공공의 개입은 젠트리피케이션과 지역 정체성의 약화 및 지속가능 성을 위협하는 요인으로 작용할 우려가 있었다. 따라서 을지로가 가진 지역 고유 의 가치와 매력을 반영하는 공공의 신중하고 심도 있는 개입이 필요하다. 본 연 구는 레트로적 장소성의 구체적 양상을 밝혔고 디자인과 패션 등 한정된 분야에 서 연구되던 레트로 개념을 장소성 영역으로 확장했다는 데 의미가 있다.
