The purpose of this study is to examine the formation and change of historical, cult ural, and tourism resources in Jeonju, based on picture postcards published during the Japanese colonial era. What I have done is to analyze the urban renewal pattern, spe cial features, and what they are used for today by grouping the images of Jeonju, wh ich drew much attention from the ruling power, into historical and city views. At that time, Jeonju was degraded from the “Jeonju-bu” of Joseon to the “Jeonju-myeon” un der the Japanese occupation resulting in a substantial change in the images of the cit y. And now, I have to accept that the historical landscape has been represented as a n object of dismantling, destruction, renovation, and transformation that stands for a p re-modern and stagnant tradition of the subject, while the urban landscape has been represented as a face of development symbolizing modern civilization of the ruler. As of now, some historical landscapes are under renovation where they are recreated fro m the object of destruction, and transformation into what they were originally meant for. The restoration of such historical landscapes is certainly an important task for the state and local community, in terms of preserving historical values, enhancing national pride, boosting tourism and the economy, and providing educational values. Besides, so me of the modern buildings are being used as cultural or commercial spaces for vario us artistic and cultural activities throughout extensive renewal projects.

본 연구는 일제강점기에 발행된 사진그림엽서를 통해 전주시의 역사적, 문화 적인 관광자원의 형성과 변화과정을 살펴보는 데 있다. 특히, 지배 권력의 시선 이 집중되었던 전주의 장소 이미지를 역사경관과 도시경관으로 분류하여 재현 과 특징, 그리고 현재의 활용 양상을 분석하였다. 전주가 조선의 ‘전주부’에서 일제의 ‘전주면’으로 변화함에 따라 장소 정체성이 빠르게 변화하였으며, 이에 따라 역사경관과 도시경관도 큰 변화를 겪었다. 연구결과, 역사경관은 피지배자 의 것으로서 해체, 파괴, 개조, 변용의 대상이 되었고 전근대적이며 정체된 전 통으로 표상되었으며, 도시경관은 지배자의 것으로서 근대화를 상징하는 발전 상으로 표상되었다. 현재, 일부 역사경관은 해체, 파괴, 변용의 대상에서 복원되 거나 복원과정 중에 있다. 이러한 역사경관의 복원은 국민적 자부심을 강화하 고 관광 및 경제 활성화, 교육적 가치 제공 등 국가와 지역사회의 중요한 과제 로 여겨지고 있다. 또한, 일부 근대건축물은 문화공간이나 상업공간으로 재생되 어 다양한 예술과 문화 활동의 장소로 활용되고 있다.
