The intellectuals in modern Korea embraced modern sports as an inevitable trend for social empowerment. Independence activists utilized sports both as a mercantilist strategy to win the war and as a means of advanced sports to cultivate and harness the power of sports itself. Meanwhile, modern sports and the independence movement have not been studied sufficiently due to several limitations. These include the origins of modern sports, the colonial situation, the multi-layered aspects of modern sports, and limitations in data collection. To identify the direction of modern sports and the independence movement in the future, it is necessary to accumulate micro studies that focus on individuals and organizations and their relationship with modern sports and the independence movement. It is important to clarify the limitations and lessons of the study to avoid biased interpretations that rely on black and white logic.

일본 강점기 근대 체육은 가장 선진 문물로 여겨지며 다양한 계층에 서 각광받았다. 본 연구는 독립운동가 중 근대 체육을 적극 활용했던 대 표 인물을 살펴보고, 근대 체육과 독립운동에 관한 연구가 사각지대였던 원인과 과제를 제시하고자 했다. 당대의 지식인들은 근대 체육을 사회진 화론적 관점에서 힘을 갖기 위한 당위적 흐름으로 받아들였다. 독립운동 가들은 한쪽에서는 이를 전쟁에서 승리하기 위한 상무주의 관점, 다른 쪽에서는 체육 자체로 힘을 길러 활용하고자 하는 선진 체육의 관점으 로 활용하였다. 한편, 지금까지 근대 체육과 독립운동이 충분히 연구되 지 못한 원인은 크게 네 가지였다. 첫째, 근대 체육의 기원에서 오는 한 계, 둘째, 식민지적 상황으로 인한 한계, 셋째, 근대 체육의 다층적 측면 으로 인한 한계, 넷째, 자료 수집의 한계 등이다. 이를 극복하고 앞으로 근대 체육과 독립운동의 지향점을 파악하기 위해서는 근대 체육과 독립 운동의 관계를 중심으로 인물이나 단체를 파악하는 미시적 연구가 쌓여 야 할 것이며, 연구의 한계와 공과를 명확히 하여 흑백논리에 치우치는 즉자적이고 일차적인 해석에서 벗어날 필요가 있다.
