This study aims to elucidate a path to faith education by the 'characterization of Christian stories' by examining the relationship between character and narrative, thereby revealing the story's role and significance in character formation. According to Hauerwas, 'character' embodies the essence of our self as agents, representing the core of our existence, orientation in life, and the source of our actions. Consequently, these characters are deeply intertwined with narratives since humans, as narrative beings, are inherently embedded within the historic fabric of their communities, with stories playing a formative role in shaping character. However, individuals are not solely shaped by stories; they also possess agency in selecting and shaping their narratives. Through this consideration of character and story, it becomes evident that stories contribute to forming individual and communal character, serving as a conduit for articulating identity. In light of this intricate relationship between character and story, Christian character is profoundly influenced by the Christian Story Given that Christian truth and faith exhibit narrative characteristics, stories are pivotal in Christian character. Hauerwas extends the concept of character to the church, proposing that when the church embodies the character of Jesus' story, it can fulfill its mission as a school for character formation and as an alternative community in the world. This study highlights the significance of Christian stories in shaping Christians' community, faith, and character while also delineating Christian truth and identity. Despite Jean-François Lyotard's assertion regarding the postmodern era's 'distrust of metanarratives,' humans are inherently shaped by stories. While modern individuals may seek liberation from narratives, authentic freedom necessitates faithful stories that imbue life with interpretation and meaning. Therefore, the educational objective of 'characterizing the Christian story' serves as a viable educational and pastoral alternative in an era marked by pluralism, catering to those who reject or struggle to find a foundational narrative for life. However, Christian character formation transcends mere programmatic endeavours. Therefore, further research and exploration of diverse educational methodologies are needed.

본 논문은 성품과 이야기와의 관계를 살펴보고, 성품형성에 있어 이야기의 역할과 의미를 밝혀봄으로써 ‘기독교 이야기의 성품화’를 통한 신앙교육의 길을 찾고자 한다. 하우어워스에게 있어 ‘성품’은 행위 주체자인 우리 자아의 능력이고, 삶의 지향으로서 우리 존재의 중심이며, 행위의 원천이다. 이러한 성품은 이야기와 관련이 깊다. 인간 은 누구나 공동체의 역사를 안고 태어나는 이야기적 존재이고, 그 이야기가 우리의 성품을 형성하기 때문이다. 하지만 우리는 이야기에 의해 일방적으로 형성되는 존재 가 아니라, 주체성을 가지고 이야기를 선택하고 자신만의 이야기를 형성하는 존재이 기도 하다. 이처럼 성품과 이야기에 대한 고찰을 통해 이야기는 공동체와 개인의 성 품을 형성하고, 정체성을 서술하는 통로가 된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 성품과 이야기와의 관계에 비추어 볼 때, 기독교성품 역시 기독교 이야기에 의해 형성되는 것임을 알 수 있다. 특히 기독교 진리뿐 아니라, 우리의 신앙 역시 이 야기적 특성을 가진다는 점에서 볼 때, 이야기는 기독교성품에 있어 핵심적인 위치를 차지한다고 할 수 있다. 더 나아가 하우어워스는 성품을 교회에도 적용하였다. 즉 그 는 교회가 기독교 이야기를 구현한 성품공동체가 될 때, 성품을 형성하는 학교이자, 세상을 향한 대안 공동체로서의 사명을 감당할 수 있다고 보았다. 본 연구를 통해 우리는 기독교 이야기가 그리스도인과 공동체의 신앙과 성품을 형 성할 뿐 아니라, 기독교 진리를 인식하고, 그리스도인의 정체성을 서술하는 중요한 범 주라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 리오타르(Jean-François Lyotard)가 주장한 바와 같이, 포 스트모더니즘 시대는 ‘메타내러티브를 불신’하는 시대이다. 하지만 인간은 이야기에 의해 형성되는 존재이다. 현대인들은 자유를 위해 이야기를 없애려고 노력하지만, 사 실 진정한 자유를 위해서는 우리 삶을 해석해 주고 의미를 부여해 줄 신실한 이야기 가 필요하다. 따라서 다원화된 세계 속에서 삶의 기반이 되어줄 이야기를 거부하거나 찾지 못한 사람들에게 ‘기독교 이야기를 성품화’하는 교육적 목표는 이 시대에 맞는 교육적, 목회적 대안이 될 수 있다고 본다. 기독교성품형성은 단순히 프로그램으로 이 루어지는 것은 아니지만, 이를 위해서는 실천의 장이 필요하다는 면에서 볼 때 앞으 로 더 깊은 연구와 다양한 교육 방법을 찾는 노력도 필요할 것으로 보인다.
