In the context of an impending pandemic, this paper discusses how the Korean Church should spiritually prepare for future pandemic situations. During the COVID-19 crisis, the Catholic Church sought to transform itself through self-renewal and reflection, moving from being a "waiting church" to a "seeking church," and from a church of their own to one that engages with Korean society. The Korean Church has also made efforts in this direction. However, the church faced social criticism when it became a source of cluster infections, and its reputation suffered further due to the emergence of far-right pastors. Faced with the task of non-face-to-face worship, the focus shifted to online services. Yet, the author believes that more importantly, the church needs to undergo a transformation towards monastic spirituality. The monastic movement has been a continuous part of Christian history, and such spirituality within the church is feasible. Even before COVID-19, the Korean Church had a high interest in spirituality and continuously conducted spiritual training. This paper introduces spiritual training practices suitable for the sentiment of the Korean Church and capable of psychological healing, such as the Jesus Prayer, QT (Quiet Time), and the Diary of Walking with Jesus. These practices are affordable spiritual training programs that can be effectively implemented within churches. During the pandemic, it's effective for the church community to engage in scripture meditation-centered spiritual training, with preachers delivering sermons based on scriptures meditated upon together with the congregation. Lastly, the paper examines the role of the church amidst a pandemic. True Christian spirituality inevitably leads to love for one's neighbor. The paper looks at missionaries who lost their lives to epidemics in late Joseon Korea, highlighting that Christianity could deeply penetrate the Korean populace due to the dedication and sacrifices of these missionaries. Many missionaries cared for the sick during epidemics and died as martyrs. Such sacrifices enabled the Korean Church to grow significantly. The paper questions whether the Korean Church has maintained this noble tradition during the COVID-19 crisis. If the Korean Church earnestly practices spiritual training, it can find hope through Jesus Christ to overcome hardships and pain, and manifest true love and service to neighbors, along with sacrifice. Should the Korean Church prepare in such a manner for another pandemic, it will not only grow healthily but also imprint a new image within Korean society.

본고에서 저자는 또다시 일어날 수 있는 팬데믹 상황에서 한국교회가 어떻게 영성 학적으로 준비해야 하는지에 관해서 쓴 논문이다. 코로나19 상황에서 천주교는 자신 쇄신과 성찰을 통해서 ‘기다리는 성당이 아닌 찾아가는 성당’으로, 그리고 ‘우리들만의 성당이 아닌 한국사회와 함께하는 성당’을 탈바꿈하려고 했다. 한국교회도 이러한 노 력이 없었던 것은 아니다. 하지만 교회가 집단감염의 진원지로 지목되면서 사회적 지 탄을 받게 되었고, 극우파 목사의 등장으로 한국교회의 위상은 땅에 떨어졌다. 이런 상황에서 한국교회는 비대면 예배라는 숙제를 가지게 되었고 영상 예배에 집중하게 되었다. 그런데 필자는 이것보다 더 중요한 것은 교회를 수도원적 영성으로 거듭나게 하는 일이라고 생각한다. 기독교의 역사 가운데 수도원 운동은 계속해서 일어났다. 그 리고 교회 안에서 수도원 영성은 가능한 일이다. 코로나19 이전부터 한국교회는 영성 에 관해서 높은 관심을 가지고 왔고 영성훈련을 계속해 진행하여 왔다. 본고에서는 한국교회의 정서에 맞고 심리적 치료가 가능한 영성훈련으로 예수기도, 큐티, 그리고 예수동행일기를 소개하였다. 이 훈련들은 큰 예산을 들이지 않고도 교회에서 충분히 시행할 수 있는 영성훈련 프로그램이다. 그리고 팬데믹 상황에서는 교회 공동체가 위 와 같은 말씀묵상 중심의 영성훈련을 실시하되, 설교자는 회중들과 같이 묵상한 본문 으로 설교하는 것이 효과적이다. 그리고 마지막에 팬데믹 가운데 교회가 해야 할 일 을 살펴보았다. 기독교의 참된 영성이라면 이웃 사랑으로 이어질 수밖에 없다. 그래서 이 논문에서는 구한말 전염병으로 인해서 목숨을 잃었던 선교사들을 살펴보았다. 구 한말 기독교가 한민족 가운데 깊이 들어올 수 있었던 것은 선교사들의 헌신과 희생이 있기 때문에 가능한 일이라고 말한다. 감염병이 돌았을 때 많은 선교사들이 환자를 돌보다가 전염되어서 순교하는 일들이 발생하였다. 이런 희생이 있었기에 한국교회는 크게 성장하고 부흥할 수 있었다. 코로나19 상황에서 한국교회는 이러한 숭고한 전통 을 지켰는가? 한국교회가 평소에 영성훈련을 진지하게 시행한다면 예수 그리스도를 통해서 소망을 얻어서 고난과 고통을 극복할 뿐 아니라, 이웃을 향한 참된 사랑과 봉 사, 그리고 희생으로 나타날 것이다. 한국교회가 또다시 다가올 팬데믹을 대비해서 이 와 같이 준비하게 된다면 교회도 건강하게 성장할 뿐만 아니라 새로운 이미지로 한국 사회에 각인될 것이다.
