The year 2023 marks the centenary of the Great Kanto Earthquake Massacre. However, in Japan, the ‘history of concealment’ is still dominated by narratives of ‘reconstruction’ and ‘disaster prevention.’ In South Korea, on the other hand, the ‘massacre’ is repeatedly talked about as an absolute concern. The gap between ‘what is said’ and ‘what is not said’ is increasingly widening. It has been 60 years since massacre studies began, and its accumulated achievements in Japan have been introduced to Korean academia, leading to the discovery of new topics. Nevertheless, its prospect is not so bright because the ‘viewpoint on the massacre’ has failed to be renewed unlike greater diversification in research topics. In this sense, this paper addresses the ‘epistemology’ of the massacre problem. In particular, this paper examines the main issues (the source of the rumor, the character of the victims), with particular attention to the ‘historical context,’ in order to shed light on the current status of massacre studies. This attempt is not only significant in its survey of existing research from a perspective of contested history, but also in its display of potential implications the history of political thought can have on actual real-world problems.

2023년은 관동대지진 학살사건이 일어난 지 100주년이 되는 해였다. 그러나 일본에서는 여전히 ‘부흥’과 ‘방재’의 스토리에 밀려 ‘은폐의 역사’가 답습되고 있다. 반면 한국에서는 ‘학살’이 절대적 관심사로 회자된다. 이 ‘이야기하는/하지 않는’ 사이의 간격은 갈수록 벌어지는 추세다. 학살연구가 시작된 지도 벌써 60년이 지났고 그동안 일본에서 축적된 성과들이 한국 학계에도 소개되어 새로운 주제들의 발굴로 이어지고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 전망이 호전되지 않는 이유는 다양해진 연구 주제들만큼 ‘학살문제를 바라로는 관점’이 새로워지지 못하고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 문제의식에서 본고에서는 학살문제의 ‘인식론’을 문제 삼기로 했다. 특히 주제의 다양화로 다소 혼잡해진 학살연구의 현주소를 밝히기 위해 그동안의 주요 쟁점(유언의 발생 근원, 피살자의 성격)을 ‘역사적 맥락’에 주의하여 살펴보았다. 이러한 본고의 시도는 연구사를 논쟁사적 관점에서 재정리하는 의의를 가질 뿐만 아니라 사상사적 접근이 현실의 문제에 가질 수 있는 가능성을 제시할 것이다.
