This paper outlines my recent body of work on paper, foregrounding aspects of touch, time and movement, found both in the making process and in the viewing experience. Focusing on the large, painted drawing Bathers 1 (2022), and its translation and transformation in the new digital video work Some Light in the Shadows (2023), I aim to show how elements of touch, time and movement are mirrored in the use of the hand-held iPhone camera, where the use of different resolutions and frame rates combine with the slowing down of footage in post-production, creating equivalents. I show how developing a filming practice to parallel and record the results of activity in the studio simultaneously considers and explores the real-time viewing experience in the gallery. This is contextualized through my earlier practice where I examined the displacement of the hand-made work by the photographic document, specifically using the negative image and large-format, analogue photography. I also discuss links between late Nineteenth Century developments in photography, optics and painting, particularly in the pointillist work of Georges Seurat and my current practice.
