his consideration is an attempt to re-recognize the Buddhist purification of Manam(만암), a high priest who left various traces in the modern and contemporary Buddhist history of Korea. Manam was a high priest who was active at Baekyangsa Temple(백양사), and he independently practiced Buddhist purification in the liberation space of Jeolla-do, including Baekyangsa Temple. He also took an advocacy for Buddhist purification in the space where the purification movement was developed. However, studies on his consciousness, line, and character of Buddhist purification remained at a rudimentary stage. Under this premise, I have recognized two aspects as the focus in this article. First, it is necessary to historically reinstate the line and intelligence for Manam Buddhist purification. So far, his spirit and steps of Buddhist purification have not been properly evaluated in the Jogye Order and the Taego Order. to overcome this. The second is that Manam Buddhist purification was continuously promoted in the space under Japanese rule, the space of liberation, and the space of the purification movement. In other words, I would like to examine Baekyangsa's activities (ascetic practice, Seonnong Buddhism, and harmonious community) in Manam under Japanese colonial rule from the perspective of Buddhist purification. This article, researched and described with this focus, will be helpful for research in this field. In particular, research on Manam, Baekyangsa, Buddhist purification movement history, Jeolla-do local history, and high monks will be applicable.

본 고찰은 한국 근현대 불교사에서 다양한 행적을 남긴 고승인 만암의 불교정화에 대한 재인식을 시도한 글이다. 만암은 백양사를 거점으로 활동 한 고승인데, 그는 불교정화를 백양사를 비롯한 전라도 지방의 해방공간에 서 독자적으로 실천하였다. 또한 정화운동이 전개된 공간에서도 불교정화 에 대한 옹호적인 행보를 갔다. 그러나 그의 불교정화에 대한 의식, 노선, 성격 등에 대한 연구는 초보적인 단계에 머물렀다. 이런 전제하에서 필자는 이 글에서 두가지 측면을 초점으로 인식했다. 첫째는 만암 불교정화에 대한 노선 및 지성을 역사적으로 복권시켜야 한 다는 것이다. 지금껏 그의 불교정화의 정신과 행보는 조계종단과 태고종단 에서 적절한 평가를 받지 못했다. 이를 극복하고자 함이다. 둘째는 만암 불교정화는 일제하 공간, 해방공간, 정화운동 공간에서 지속적으로 추진되 었다는 점이다. 즉 필자는 일제하 만암의 백양사 활동(수행, 선농불교, 화 합 공동체)도 불교정화의 관점에서 살피고자 한다. 이런 초점을 갖고 연구, 서술된 이 글이 이 분야 연구에 도움이 될 것 이다. 특히 만암, 백양사, 불교정화운동사, 전라도 지방사, 고승 등의 연구에 참고되길 바란다.
