The question raised in this study is whether science and technology starting from tools can form a system. Homo faber’s paradox arises from the process of recursive human-instrumental communication. The existence of a paradox in a system means that what it produces creates the system again. Homo faber’s paradox is formulated as follows: ①Human nature makes artifacts. ②Artificial objects make human nature. ③Humans make tools, tools make humans. Homo faber’s paradox is formulated as “X2 + 1 = 0”, which means self-referential and continuous recursion. One way to resolve this paradox is to show that the indication that follows is recursive when distinguishing between the ‘perceptual observer’ of the psychological system and the ‘communication observer’ of the social system. Paradox is visualized with the creation of time and space, and the process by which homo faber forms science and technology starting from tools will be examined through G. Spencer-Brown’s ‘Indication method’ and Niklas Luhmann’s ‘self-referential autopoietic systems theory’. As a result, it will be revealed that the process of resolving homo faber’s paradox is to put science and technology on the horizon of system theory.
