The purpose of this study is to explore the global citizenship and related experiences of international students. Based on the mixed research method, a survey examining the influence of demographic and personal background factors on the levels of global citizenship and its sub-domains (knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behavioral intentions) was conducted along with a focus group interview (FGI). The survey identified relatively high level of international students’ global citizenship, while the level ‘skills’ was the lowest. Moreover, the experience of GCED was found to make a significant difference in the levels of both ‘knowledge’ and ‘behavioral intentions’. Meanwhile, the FGI revealed narrow understanding and low motivation of GCED by the international students. The significance of this study lies in that it offered primary data for developing effective GCED in the field of higher education. Providing educational support for enhancing the interest and skills of solving global issues as global citizens is essential especially in this age of transnational migration. Further field studies on the practical application of GCED for international students based on the results of this study are anticipated.

본 연구는 고등교육 현장에서 효과적인 세계시민교육의 토대를 마련하고자 국내 외 국인 유학생들의 세계시민의식 및 관련 경험에 관해 혼합 연구방법을 활용하여 탐구하 였다. 먼저 유학생 208명을 대상으로 인구통계요인(성별, 국적 등), 개인배경요인(한국 어 능력, 체류기간 등), 전반적인 세계시민의식 수준과 하위 영역별(지식, 기술, 태도, 실천의지) 세계시민의식 수준에 대한 설문조사를 수행하고 그 결과를 분석하였다. 질 적 연구로는 소규모 초점집단면담을 통해 유학생들의 세계시민교육 관련 경험, 인식, 기대에 대해 살펴보았다. 연구결과, 유학생의 전반적인 세계시민의식은 비교적 높았으나 하위영역 중 ‘기술(skills)’ 영역이 가장 낮게 나타났다. 또한, 세계시민교육 경험 여 부에 따라 ‘지식(knowledge)’과 ‘실천의지(behavioral intentions)’ 영역에서 유의미한 차이가 나타났다. 한편, 초점집단면담을 통해 유학생들이 세계시민교육을 ‘타문화 이 해’라는 협의의 개념으로 이해하고 있으며, 세계시민교육에 대한 인식과 동기가 부족함 을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 유학생 세계시민의식에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악함으로 써 이를 기반으로 적절한 세계시민교육을 위한 토대를 마련하였다는 데에 의의가 있 다. 유학생들에게 세계시민으로서 전 지구적 문제해결 능력 함양을 위한 교육적 지원 을 제공하는 것은 거시적 맥락에서 초국적 이주의 시대를 함께 살아가기 위한 필수불 가결한 노력이라 할 수 있다. 이 연구를 토대로 한 후속 연구로서, 유학생을 위한 세계 시민교육 프로그램 개발 및 적용을 다루는 현장 연구가 필요할 것이다.
