In the post-COVID-19 era, many global companies have paid increasing attention to the sustainability of their corporate management. In the midst of crises such as the global pandemic and climate change, the companies attempt to consider “Environmental, Social, and Governance” (ESG) as important criteria and directions for corporate survival. For churches, which are also in the midst of quantitative and qualitative crises, the shift to ESG by the corporations provides important insights into the meaning and practice of their sustainability. This paper presents an empirical discussion of sustainable church in the ESG era. Within the framework of a missional ecclesiology that emphasizes the social responsibility and public values of church, it discusses how ESG concepts can contribute to the ecological transition of the church structure. In particular, the framework of “Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation” (JPIC), which has been influential in the formation of ecumenical ecclesiology, is explored in relation to ESG in order to provide new directions and alternatives for the missionary and pastoral transformation of the church. This study will therefore investigate the development of the ESG concept, its inter-connectedness with the JPIC framework, and the missionary implications of the JPIC-ESG-based transformation of church structures. In addition, some examples of missional church which are motivated by JPIC-ESG will be discussed. In doing so, we will explore ways to enhance the viability of churches in the post-Christendom era and improve their credibility in the public sphere.

포스트코로나 시대, 수많은 글로벌 기업이 경영의 지속가능성에 관해 서 주목하고 있다. 세계적인 팬데믹과 기후변화와 같은 위기 상황 속에서 기업은 “환경, 사회, 지배구조”(ESG)를 기업의 존속을 위한 중요한 기준 이자 방향으로 상정하고 있다. 글로벌 기업의 ESG로의 방향 전환은 양적, 질적 위기 가운데 있는 교회에 있어서 전통적인 체질을 개선하고 지속가능 성을 위한 의미와 실천에 중대한 통찰을 제시한다. 본 논문은 ESG 시대 교회의 지속가능성에 대한 하나의 실험적 논의를 개진한다. 교회의 사회적 책임과 공적인 가치를 강조하는 선교적 교회론의 틀 속에서 ESG 개념이 교회의 생태적 전환에 어떻게 기여할 수 있을지를 논의한다. 특별히 에큐메니컬 교회론 형성에 영향을 미친 “정의, 평화, 창 조 질서의 보전”(JPIC)이라는 프레임워크를 ESG와 상호 접목하여 교회의 선교적이고 목회적 전환을 위한 방안을 마련해 보고자 한다. 이러한 논의를 위해서 본 연구는 ESG 개념이 탄생하는 과정, 특징, JPIC 프레임워크와의 상호 연결성, JPIC-ESG에 기반한 선교적 교회 구 조의 전환과 이에 대한 선교적 의미를 짚어보고자 한다. 아울러, JPICESG에 기반한 선교적 교회 운동의 몇 가지 사례도 다루고자 한다. 이를 통해 탈교회 시대 교회의 생존력을 높이고 공적 영역에서 교회의 신뢰도를 증진하는 방향을 모색하고자 한다.
