The task of modern homiletics, at least for the past generation, has been to introduce new methodologies that are in step with New Hermeneutic and narrative theology. They are represented by inductive or narrative sermons, and they are theories that dissolve awareness of history and experience into sermons as a channel of revelation. The emergence of this new methodology has provided vitality to modern homiletics, but at the same time brought about confrontational debates with traditional theories. In this process, interest in the universal reality of preaching that penetrates diverse and conflicting methodologies has been overlooked, and productive dialogue and research on it cut off. It is no coincidence that the Korean church experienced a decline in preaching theologically and ethically during the past generation when new preaching discourses were passionately advocated. This study’s motive is to resolve the wasteful controversy within modern homiletics caused by conflicting methodologies and to reflect on preaching education, where the substantive reality of preaching is often overlooked. The responsibility of homiletics, which leads to the healthy practice of preaching, lies in establishing the performative principle of preaching that makes the act of preaching possible. This study seeks to establish the principle as ‘exposition’. It is a basic rule or universal principle for executing sermons. The church has consistently stated the unique characteristics of sermons for a long time, which is the internal movement of preaching that goes back and forth between exegesis of the biblical text and application to today's life. Awareness of ‘exposition’ as a principle is basic knowledge that is prerequisite for understanding and practicing the act of ‘preaching.’ However, in the preaching field and among experts, ‘exposition’ as a principle has been absorbed into ‘expository preaching’, a specific preaching method. This study aims to raise the topic of constant interest in homiletics by establishing the principle of exposition, which is the basic rules of preaching, and thereby clarify the substantive content of preaching education.

현대 설교학의 과제는 적어도 지난 한 세대동안은 새로운 해석학(New Hermeneutic)과 이야기 신학(narrative theology)과 보폭을 같이하는 새로 운 방법론들을 소개하는데 있어왔다. 그것들은 귀납적(inductive), 또는 이야기(narrative plot) 설교 등으로 대표되는 것으로, 그것들은 계시의 통로 로서 역사와 경험에 대한 인식을 설교에 용해시킨 이론들이다. 이러한 새 로운 방법론의 등장은 현대 설교학에 활력소를 공급했으면서도, 동시에 전통적 이론들과의 대립적 논쟁을 불러왔다. 이 과정에서 다양하고 상반된 방법론들을 관통해내는 설교의 보편적 실체에 대한 관심은 간과되고 그것 에 대한 생산적인 대화와 연구는 단절되었다. 공교롭게도, 새로운 설교 담 론들이 열렬히 주창되었던 지난 한 세대 이후부터 한국교회는 신학적으로 나 윤리적으로 설교의 급격한 쇠퇴를 경험하고 있다. 본 연구는 상반된 방 법론들로 야기된 현대 설교학 내의 소모적 논쟁을 해소하고, 설교의 실체적 본질이 간과되곤 하는 설교 교육을 성찰하려는 동기에서 시작되었다. 설교의 건강한 실행을 이끄는 설교학의 책임은 ‘설교’라는 행위를 가능케 하는 설교의 수행적 근본을 정립하는데 있다. 설교의 행위적 방식은 각 지역의 고유한 언어와 정신 문화, 역사적 학습의 경험과 어우러진다는 점에 서 획일적일 수 없지만, 동시에 새로운 방법론들에 민감하지도 않다. 따라 서 설교 교육의 항속적인 관심은 설교가 설교되도록 하는 설교의 고유하 고 보편적인 원리를 밝히는데 있어야 한다. 본 연구는 그 원리를 ‘강해’(講 解; exposition)로 정립하고자 한다. ‘강해’는 설교를 실행시키는 기본 규칙, 내지 보편 원리로서, 교회는 오랫동안 설교의 고유한 특징을 일관되게 진술해 왔다. 그것은 성서본문을 주해하고 그것을 오늘의 삶에 조명하는 일, 또는 본문의 주해와 삶에의 적용을 오가는 설교의 ‘내적 움직임’(inner movement)이다. 원리로서 ‘강해’에 대한 인식은 ‘설교’라는 행위의 근본을 파악하고 실행함에 있어 전제되는 기본 지식이다. 그러나 설교현장이나 전 문가들 사이에서 원리로서의 ‘강해’는 특정 설교방식인 ‘강해설교’에 흡수되어 버렸다. 본 연구는 설교의 기본 규칙인 강해의 원리를 정립함으로써 설 교학의 항속적 관심주제를 환기시키고, 그를 통해 설교 교육을 보다 명확 한 토대 위에 올려놓고자 한다.
