The purpose of this paper is to consider the issue of ‘四端 不中節' of the dominant sex marriage. In response to the four complex theory that appeared in Ugye's letter to Gubong in 1560, I would like to consider the idea of the ’ ‘四端 不中節‘in Ugye's philosophy and the argumentation of Toegye, Gobong, and Yulgok. This issue has been the subject of debate among Confucian scholars since the Joseon Dynasty, when Gobong raised the issue of the ’四端‘ in a letter to Toegye, rather than the period of Juja. At the heart of this issue is how to understand the status of the ’四端‘ and how it can become a sub-interrogation. In a letter to Gubong, Ugye points out that scholars only cite Zhu Xi's theory and say that it is always correct without their own theory, and speaks of the concept and standard of his theory. Through this approach, I would like to analyze the concept of '四端 不中節’ in the hierarchy and study its philosophical implications.

본고는 우계 성혼의 ‘사단 부중절’ 문제를 고찰하는 것이 목적이다. 이에 필자는 1560년 우계가 구봉에게 보낸 편지(『三賢手簡『元帖1)에 나타난 사단지설(四端之說)에 대한 답장을 통하여 우계 철학에 있어 사단 부중절에 대한 생각과 그 논변의 원조가 되는 퇴계와 고봉 그리고 율곡의 부중절에 대해서도 함께 고찰하고자 한다. 이 문제는 주자 당시의 시대보다 조선시대에 와서 고봉이 퇴계에게 사단 부중절에 대한 문제를 편지로 제기한 이후부터 유학자 간에 논쟁의 대상이 되었다. 이 문제의 핵심은 사단의 지위를 어떻게 이해해야 하고, 그 사단이 어떻게 부중절이 될 수 있는가 하는 문제이다. 우계는 구봉에게 보낸 편지에서 학자들이 주자의 설(說)을 인용해서 펼치기만 하고, 자신의 학설도 없이 항상 옳다고 말하는 것을 지적하면서 자신의 학설에 대한 개념과 기준을 말하고 있다. 이러한 접근을 통해서 우계의 ‘사단 부중절’ 개념을 분석하고 그 철학적 함의에 대해서 연구하고자 한다.
